The HSE-3xxx series M-Drive is a derivative of the successful, but now outdated, HSE-1xxx series M-Drive. It is not parts-compatible with the older model.

The HSE-3xxx series M-Drive arrived on the market as the Driscoll M-4 suffered a series of production issues that resulted in a number of crashes and the associated bad publicity. While these issues have now been rectified, that engine had to be rebranded as a result. The vacuum caused by the sudden loss of production was filled by the newly released HSE-3xxx series and Helena Space Engineering jumped into prominence as a major manufacturer of M-Drives. It was only with luck, and the appearance of a white-knight investor, that the Driscoll brand survived.
