The officers of the Touchdown Navy found the Cutlass slightly too big for a number of actions in which they were involved and developed a cut-down version about half-way between a Blade and a Cutlass. These Boarding Dirks, as they became known, they then would have manufactured to their own personal specifications.
The dirks tend to have knuckle-duster grips (which are practical items in their own right), and the blades were initially ground-down cutlass blades - although resin composite blades with diamond coatings have become popular.
Exotic examples have had electrical stun-charges built into the grip, but these were on-time items and could discharge unexpectedly when the dirks were used to parry and were found to be impractical or dangerous to the carrier.
