Aniyun
A sophont species and Minor Race native to Quatenon. They are members of the Corellan League.
Description[edit]
The Aniyun are a small race, barely one metre tall and massing less than 30 kilograms. They superficially resemble bipedal beetles, as they have an iridescent outer casing and forewings, along with delicate flight wings. However, unlike insects they have only four limbs and an internal skeletal structure. Even in the thick atmosphere of Quatenon their wings are only usable when launching from height and gliding, unfolding to a span of four metres. The long flexible neck of an Aniyun is capable of turning the head through 270 degrees of motion. Widely-spaced eyes are adapted to see through the murky orange light of their planet's hazy atmosphere.
Society[edit]
Aniyun live in communities of 40-100 members. They are considered adults after 60 local years, corresponding to about 16 standard years. Upon reaching adulthood, Aniyun are subject to 'trials of passage' to determine the career path they are to follow. The trials generally result in an assignment as an apprentice to a master of an existing occupation. Occasionally, the process may result in an Aniyun being transferred to another community -- and very occasionally the Aniyun may fail the trial and be exiled. If so, they live as an outcast for a period of 10 local years. During this time, an outcast can call upon the hospitality of any community but their own and may be assigned menial tasks to support their upkeep.
In theory, Quatenon is a member of the Corellan League, but its inhabitants are happy with their basic industrial civilization and see little reason to advance or to travel. Civilization consists of dozens of city-states which have maintained a consistent culture for thousands of years.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The Aniyun are only native to the southern half of one of Quatenon's four continents and have made no organised efforts to explore their entire world. Despite the formation of towns and small cities of up to 30,000 residents, these larger settlements are not unified in any formal manner, acting as dozens or hundreds of communities working out arrangements as they go.
In -1525, Corellan scouts made first contact with the Aniyun. Relations were friendly, but most Aniyun couldn't understand the concept of a large unified state. However, when offered League membership the race wasn't opposed. Unfortunately, there was no central government to sign a treaty. Gaining consensus of the majority of communities took decades, and the Aniyun finally became League members in -1380.
