These are elite protected forces which serve to protect their home system of Olxber (world) and are hired out to generate revenue from outside the system. They are used throughout the subsector and their reputation extends beyond.
AK Mercenaries (Military) Description[edit]
They usually don't deploy in units larger than a 500 man battalion. There is a 100 man HHC, and four line companies. Each 100 man line company is divided into four 25 man platoons.
Most support and logistical units are centralized at the battalion level. The companies tend to be tactical and very light on organic support. The officers are one lieutenant per platoon, with a platoon sergeant, and two squad leaders. One platoon leader is a captain and he leads the company. Each platoon has a dedicated medic with kit, a demolitions expert, one sniper with spotter and one heavy weapons expert per squad.
The level of equipment is tailored to what the patron is willing to pay for and the perceived threat level of the contract. Units are also adjusted for the deployment environment and contract duration.
It is not unheard of for the units to hire subcontractors to provide support if the capability doesn't exist within the unit, or if it would be cheaper to out-source. Light duty is done in armored vacuum suits, medium is in TL–11 combat armor.
There is limited access to TL–13 battledress for heavy assault contracts. Organic maintenance assets are not proficient in its service and upkeep.
The weapons load is laser carbines, laser rifle specialists are used for target designation and sniper duties. Accelerator rifles, snub pistols and snub SMGs are common among officers and support troops. 4cm RAM grenades and man portable, disposal package TAC missiles are used for harder targets.
The battledress equipped troops have gauss rifles with grenade launchers and PGMP-13s for squad support. They often use a 10cm mortar for platoon level fire support if surface deployed. For boarding actions and zero-G operations they use an extensive EVA, zero-G maneuver rig capable of 1G acceleration and 48 hours of life support. There have been several famous assaults where the troopers have taken advantage of this endurance and come upon targets by drifting slowly over several hours to acquire space stations and targets in fixed orbits. They use robots to carry heavy support weapons, TAC missiles, breaching charges, fusion cutting torches and the like. Dedicated assault shuttles are used for longer range insertions and extractions with one platoon per shuttle plus equipment.
For battles on airless moons they prefer to use T.I.C.Cs (Tactical Insertion Command Centers). These units are dropped from orbit, land using their own retro rockets and literally dig in. They are autonomous building sized robots, they have earth moving equipment installed to allow a command and control center filled with active and passive EMS sensors, extensive ECM, fire direction, computers, a missile bay and barracks with workshops, field kitchen and battalion aid level surgical facilities all powered by a dedicated fusion power plant. These headquarters can support a battalion and has its own self defense fire power. They dig in usually to a depth of 100m below the surface, depending on the conditions, and deploy a constellation of six networked early warning satellites. Three remote surface deployed point defense lasers compliment the deep missile silos.
