About Me

I started playing Traveller back in 1980 with the "Little Black Books." I was a science nerd even back then, one year from going to college for Computer Science and Astronomy, and I had been playing D&D for about a year.

I immediately started creating My Own Traveller Universe although it never got any play. The group I fell in with at College in 1983 was a D&D group, although one person knew about and played Traveller in the Imperium. We play just a bit, largely just the two of us.

Graduation and my first job came in 1987 at a small college. I headed up the Gaming club and we managed a couple of Traveller games. Over the intervening years gaming sort of died, although there were some brief flares, including one short-lived Traveller campaign around 1995 which is the most play My Traveller Universe ever got.

Through it all I would collect Traveller materials and read. MegaTraveller. The New Era. T4. While the constant reformation of D&D nearly drove me from gaming alltogether somehow I wasn't mad with regard to Traveller. I never played any of the above, but I still have the books, and I read.

GURPS Traveller seemed a Gods-send. Here was a company that would remain in business while continuing the Traveller line! I always liked the concept of GURPS, if not exactly its execution. I eagerly followed its development.

At about the time I started remaking My Traveller Universe and casting it into GURPS terms Marc Miller republished the Little Black Books. Although I still had my own originals from 1980 I got these to preserve them in the early 2000s. War waged within me since the GURPS line was developing, but I liked the old-fashioned simplicity of the Classic rules, even with their obvious problems.

Still no playing was actually done.

Sometime after graduate school I moved to Boston in 2008 to take my first astronomy-based position. The move, and the career change, was such a large change to my psyche that it started trying to draw comfort from my past. One of the things it dredged up was gaming. While I easily found a D&D group, I decided to try to find - or develop - a Traveller group.

It worked, but our first problem was to figure out what rule set to use. The choices were Classic, GURPS, or the new Mongoose Traveller rules. I'd looked at the Mongoose rules a bit. They seemed expensive especially given that Marc had republished the Classic ruleset, but after closely reading the Core Book I was convinced of their quality. We decided to use the Mongoose rules.

After almost 20 years I was finally playing a regular campaign!

After years of thinking about it, I finally decided that I like the Classic Timeline. While stability has its place, I'm looking forward to playing through the wars, the assassination, and the Virus. It's a personal preference, but I'm excited its one that I'll finally be able to take advantage of.
