Maintenance Hatches: At some points, small unobtrusive maintenance hatches have been placed in bulkheads to allow repair or service personnel access to machinery or equipment.[1]
Maintenance hatches are kept closed except when actually in use; they are generally ignored by crew members and unnoticed by passengers. Maintenance hatches are not powered. They lock with a service key. On most commercial vessels, all maintenance hatch locks are opened by the same key; most officers and senior crew personnel are issued this key.
