is interdicted to protect the development of the indigenous human population, who appear to be the descendants of a sublight colony mission from Terra. They are clustered in a large settlement on the coast of a shallow inland sea. Hunters and trappers wander inland for months on end, returning to civilization when they have accumulated a suitable amount of furs to sell. Other industry includes a little ore mining and primitive greenhouse agriculture.

Original Settlement:

The first colonists arrived on Ylaven, or as they call it Dakota, around -500 IC, or about 1600 years ago. They were in suspended animation since they left Terra almost 2000 years before. When their ship arrived at Ylaven they landed and canibalized it's hull to build shelters and burrow an underground shelter against the cold. Over the course of 30 years they performed extensive projects seeding the world with many of the life forms they had brought with them from Terra.

Their largest project was planting millions of trees to help raise and maintain oxygen levels in the atmosphere. This has been their largest and most successful efforts, almost the entire continent is completly covered by a sea of evergreens. Along with this they planted a collection of shrubs and other ground hugging plants to provide shelter for the smaller wildlife they were going to release.

By the end of their 30 years perparation they began releasing the higher life forms into the forests, Deer first to establish a population base and spread across the continent. This was followed by the more predatory species like Bears and eventually Lions.

Another of their projects was to seed the Baltic Sea with life, including salmon and trout, which forms a major part of their diet.

Disaster:

About 50 years after making planet fall, their was an accident in the power plant of their cave shelter. The fusion reactor which had provided all their power exploded killing fully two thirds of the population including many scientists.

The survivors fled the radiation flooded caves and eventually settled on the coast of the Baltic Sea. They survived on the fish of the sea and deer that gathered in the area.

Over the next generation, much of the technology that had been salvaged, including small power sources, computers, weapons and vehicles, either broke down or was lost. The TL had dropped to about TL 2, although Environmental TL dropped further to TL 1.

Rebirth of Science:

Ylaven wallowed at this level for nearly 800 years (300IC), until a figure arose and began teaching the science of the ancestors. Many rejected his teachings as heretical and likely to bring disaster down on them. These ludities grew violent against the students who fought to protect their new master.

The new scientist used several advanced weapons to quel their opponents, when ever they came into conflict. Riots raged in Chicago on and off for many years until the ludite leaders suddenly conceded defeat and declared the scientists their masters. This was met with much concern by the populace but they had lost the will to fight after nearly a decade of fighting. The instigators had turned to the other side. The scientists had won.

Under the scientists the population grew a hundred fold, no longer held in check by poor sewage and disease. Farming of the fish stocks in the Baltic also helped sustain the population, and raised the overall standard of living. They developed improved contruction materials and better road surfaces.

Imperial Navy actions in the system included destroying the base of the notorious pirate Mous Alhabah who disappeared with his treasure in 429 IC.

The Telegraph was developed around 50 years ago, and is slowly being suplanted by the voice telephone. Today around 1 in 10 housholds have a telephone.

During the Fifth Frontier War:

The Ylaven system was captured by the Zhodani during 1109. It was during this period of occupation that a long term base was established in the outer planetoid belt. It has remained undetected through to 1120. The IISS's interdiction has focused on the Ylaven mainworld and the Gas Giants that would be used for wilderness refuelling.

Steam engines were developed within the last ten years and a simple rail system that runs from one end of the city to the other has almost been completed.

Natural Disaster:

Around 20 years ago there was a totally unprecedented earthquake that leveled most of the poorer areas of Chicago. Hundreds lost their lives in the debris. Several ore mines collapes killing dozens more. The areas of Chicago with the newest buildings are those areas that were damaged in the quake. The scientists have worked to develop a completely new and more quake resistant contruction material that all new buildings are being made from. The mines have been redug, and shored up with more secure methods and refuges have been built into area of the mines where trapped miners can take refuge in case of a collapse and use the telephone located their to call for help.

In the immediate aftermath of the quake there was an outbreak of severe cold like symptoms. Nearly a hundred people were killed before it was brought under control. There have been no reports of the disease before or since.

This description doesn’t do D’Ganzio justice. It is also the home address for thousands of independent armorers, bio-sculptors, medical services, and R&R centers. No fewer than eleven spinworlds orbit D’Ganzio, ranging in population from a few thousand (Mediquik, Little Vegas), to over one hundred thousand (Instellarms Fields). The tech Level of 10 only applies to locally produced items. All of the medical technology is Level 12, minimum, and arms of TL 12 are often available.

In addition to D’Ganzio, there are other settlements in the system, mostly small independent volatiles producers. Most have populations in the hundreds, with the notable exception being Flax, a satellite of Nlyn, the inner gas giant.

The War of the Princes - factions supported by several trader families go to war. Initially, a trade war ensued. This eventually led to bloodshed when certain factions could not come to grips with the economic realities of the situation, namely bankruptcy. To stop bankruptcy from happening, one family began to eliminate the leadership of each faction. Slowly, each faction began to lose control over its share of the markets and profits. One family, Familia Santiago, remained solvent and gained the upper hand, eventually eliminating all competition. Famila Santiago named itself as the ruler of Equus, and so started the tradition of the Trade Dictators.

Third Frontier War begins. Equus sends volunteer battalions to Inthe (SM 2410). These batallions are loaded into the 154th Battle Rider Squadron ships as part of the Imperial army's Colonial Contingent.

Battle for Porozlo - the 154th BRS assists. Equus Volunteer Batallions lose 80% of their effectives during the orbital assault. Veterans return to Equus with honors. Some veterans supposedly joined the 4518th Lift Infantry Regiment. Normally Wet Navy Marines, the Equus Volunteers were not familiar with land tactics and suffered the consequences.
