There are multiple intrepretations of the abbreviation LIC or Limited liability Imperial Charter.

  • Library Data (A-M) and Referee's Companion say that LIC stands for "Limited liability Imperial Charter".
  • Behind the Claw and Far Trader say it stands for "Limited Imperial Company".

IMO the easiest way to account for this is to say that the latter version is folk etymology derived from the abbreviation. It's not true, but it's what people think is true.
