Their specific purpose is unknown. They may have served as money, jewelry, psionic focuses, or something completely different.{{Page cite|name=GURPS Traveller Core Rules|page=26|citeName=GT26}}

Original coyns have been found in various precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, iridium, [[Library Data:monadium|monadium]], and even uranium. Sets range in size from six to 38 pieces, and are considered desirable to museums throughout the [[Library Data:Third Imperium|Imperium]]. Each coyn has a scrap value of Cr400 (if gold); to a museum, the value is closer to Cr4,000.{{Page cite|citeName=GT26}}

Copies of sets of coyns are made of aluminum, lead, or zinc and are more frequently encountered in the hands of unscrupulous merchants or traders. Such fake coyns have a value of about Cr2 each.{{Page cite|citeName=GT26}}
