NOTES ON RANK TABLE:
Security Branch
The Security Branch is charged with providing security and law enforcement for the Scout Service. Security Branch Scouts serve as police enforcers on Scout property, as commandos or shipboard light troops, for special Scout activities, and as clandestine agents for Intelligence Branch. Agents of the IISS Security Branch have great authority to arrest, detain, or question individuals suspected of violations of Imperial law, and can demand cooperation from local authorities as the need arises. Unlike the majority of the IISS, Security Branch is organized similar to a military unit with formal ranks and a chain of command. Members of Security Branch usually remain in Security for the majority of their careers. A few members of this branch are recruited for the Special Security Service ("SSS" or "S-3"), which acts as an elite commando unit to recover IISS personnel and equipment that have fallen under hostile control. S-3 was founded in the earliest days of the Scout Service. [1][2]

In detailing the Scout Security Branch Rank Table, GT:First In was the primary reference, with additional reference made to USAF Senior NCO & Warrant Ranks. Since Security Branch and S-3 are not primarily combat troops or large formations, but rather small Special Forces infiltrators / enforcers and recon / intelligence units employing highly technical equipment as befits their service, the Senior NCO Ranks are skewed toward substantive titles that befit their technical specialist nature. Staff & Leadership Appointments such as Leading Sergeant, First Sergeant, and Sergeant Major are appointment ranks for the ranks shown, and are granted to Scout Guardsmen of the appropriate Rank Grades when such positions are required.
Warrant Officers are traditionally technical specialists and comprise the Master Sergeant ranks. Technical Sergeants are the more generic technical NCO grade at the same level as Gunnery Sergeants, of which Gunnery Sergeants are a type.
For Example:
In the USAF, the 3 seniormost NCO Grades (E7-E9) are:
USAF Senior NCO Grades:
- E7 Master Sergeant
- E8 Senior Master Sergeant
- E9 Chief Master Sergeant
And ANY ONE of these "Master Sergeants" may have an "Appointment Rank" such as "First Sergeant" (there are no Sergeants Major in the USAF), just as in the early Second World War (when the US Army only had grades E1-E7):
US Army Senior NCO Grades (Early WW2):
- E5 Staff Sergeant (Stripes: 3 chevrons & 1 Rocker) - Squad/Platoon NCO
- E6 Technical Sergeant (Stripes: 3 chevrons & 2 Rockers) - Platoon Leader/NCO
- » Appointment: First Sergeant (Stripes: 3 chevrons & 2 Rockers* w/ center Diamond)- Company Staff NCO
- E7 Master Sergeant (Stripes: 3 chevrons & 3 Rockers)- Battalion-level Specialist Subunit NCOIC
- » Appointment: Sergeant Major (Stripes: 3 chevrons & 3 Rockers w/ center Star)- Battalion Staff NCO
