Template talk:Privateer Ranks

Corsairs of the Naval Auxiliary Commerce Raider and Privateer variety often use a paramilitary seniority system of "ranking" that is somewhat more formalized than the informal ranks used by common Pirates and freebooters. Ranks listed in italics in the Rank Table Template tend to be specific to the more formal and "official" Starmerc-type Privateers or Naval Auxiliary Commerce Raider organizations. Common "Pirate" and freebooter ranks are much more simplified and can vary more widely, but typically include only the non-italicized ranks shown (or linguistic equivalents).

Note that Classic Traveller Book 9: Pirates, p.22 mentions that:

"Professional privateers may break many of the norms established about pirates in this volume. They often have a strict hierarchy and may be organized more like naval auxiliaries operating under military discipline. They behave in a more professional manner than a typical pirate crew and have a better reputation for it."

The Privateer ranks table detailed here is primarily based on Classic Traveller Book 9: Pirates and supplemented by related parallel rank tables from MgT Books and 3rd party supplements.
