Talk:Tainted Atmosphere
Notes (2018)[edit]
You have “Organic taints” on the list but that’s confusing. I’d call it biological taint (e.g. pollen, fungal spores, tiny insects, microbiota)
A couple other suggestions for Taints:
- Ozone (O3)
- Radioactive particulates (fallout or natural)
- Silicates (fine dust)
- Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)
- - Matt Kerwin
Tainted atmospheres should describe what happens to a person should they attempt to live without a filter mask and if the irritant affects eyes/mucous membranes or just breathing. Is there a doctor in the house that can attest to any of those things?
It should also say whether people can acclimate naturally or be adapted with biological, bionic or genetic enhancements. For example it may be possible to acclimate naturally to a high O2 or high CO2 up to a certain percentage, if you spend enough time on the planet. People who seek a quicker solution may have an option to be modified for the world. This may belong in the article as "possibilities" with the Referee determining when such situations apply. It would be excellent local color to say that on a certain world "natives" are identifiable by their raspy voices which are caused by an implanted or grown filter in their larynx.

Matthew Kerwin, thanks for your comments. Excellent advice. I had previously written several of your suggestions before into my rough drafts and am including what you suggested that I hadn't already included. It may take me a few days or even moths to aggregate 40 years of Traveller taint knowledge and roll it together into an integrated article.
- Thank you again!
