Note on Imperial Standards[edit]

In a future where Humaniti has been in space for 10,000 years, has a central "empire" of 11,000 worlds, and has no central "homeworld" that everyone agrees upon, it can easily be argued (from the standpoint of the Imperium) that NO particular world need be a standard for the basis of units, but rather an arbitrarily chosen "Round Value" that is close to prior standard accepted values and that simplifies general physical or mathematical calculations is more useful.

Thus, the following units can be arbitrarily chosen and DEFINED precisely and exactly by convention for ease of use and calculation, if desired:

  1. Standard Acceleration Unit. (abbr. "g"): 1g ≡ 10.0 m/s2
  2. Standard Astronomical Unit. (abbr. "AU"): 1 AU ≡ 150 million km (almost exactly ≈ 500 ls)
  3. Standard Parsec. (abbr. "pc"): 1 pc ≡ 200,000 AU (= 3.173 ly)
