Pallique, not Palique[edit]

Evidence for Palique[edit]

There is one source for the spelling "Palique": Supplement 03, pp32-33. Both the subsector map and the UWP listings show this spelling.

GURPS: Far Trader (p135) similarly uses the name "Palique" one time in the listing for Mora subsector. 1248 similarly uses "Palique" in The Freedom League. And finally, Mongoose's book "The Spinward Marches" also lists "Palique".

All three of these books could only take this name from one source: Supplement 03.

Discredited[edit]

However, Supplement 03 can be discredited as a reliable source easily: consider SPIN 0808, which has a name of "Fenl's Gren" on the UWP listing on p32. But the subsector chart on p33, the name is correctly given as "Fen's Gren". Thus there are errors AND inconsistencies in Supplement 03. While this does not prove that Palique is the wrong spelling, it undermines its reliability.

Evidence for Pallique[edit]

Now, there are three pieces of evidence that support the spelling "Pallique":

  1. The "classic" Traveller poster map of the Spinward Marches, which shows the spellings "Pallique" and, by the way, "Fen's Gren".
  2. The subsector map for Mora subsector in the Regency Sourcebook, a TNE production that involved new maps created from official sources, which shows the spellings "Pallique" and "Fen's Gren".
  3. The DRAFT map of the Spinward Marches.

Note that the map in the Spinward Marches Campaign is merely a reproduction of the posters; I do not consider it an independent printing.

Furthermore, the MegaTraveller version of the poster map, which shows the Ihatei incursions, is probably just an edit of the "classic" poster.

Evidence for "PALLIQUE" in the Draft Map[edit]

The Draft Map spelling is actually tricky, because it shows an EDIT PROCESS that happened to Pallique. The ORIGINAL form of the world name was indeed "PALIQUE" but if that were correct, there would be no need for edits. However, the name itself shows signs of AMENDMENT in these ways:

  1. The fourth letter ("I") shows an OVERPRINT of an "L".
  2. The fifth letter ("Q") shows an "I" PREPENDED to it.
  3. Thus the name was deliberately changed from an original PALIQUE to PALLIQUE. Whether this was an arbitrary change or a correction is not known.

A weak bit of support also comes from "Fen's Gren", which agrees with the posters.

Conclusion[edit]

In conclusion, the draft map agrees together with the posters and the Regency Sourcebook, which have the spellings PALLIQUE and FEN'S GREN, against Supplement 03.

Thus there is strong evidence that the intended world name is indeed "PALLIQUE", and secondly that the official Spinward Marches posters are actually more reliable than Supplement 03.
