Knofudu is a very hostile planet with a wealth of mineral resources. Most of the inhabitants are employees of one of the numerous mining companies who process gas and export it. Life is rough and dangerous, and fatal accidents are not uncommon. The companies pay well and rely heavily on automation imported from offworld.

Mainworld Climate & Physical Features

Knofudu's atmosphere is both its blessing and its curse. With a pressure of 50 standard atmospheres at ground level, it requires structures and vehicles to be built resembling submarines. However, it is rich in halogens which are valuable enough to warrant mining operations, even if breathing air has to be imported from offworld.

Ecology

No native life.

Government

The planet's government has grown out of mining unions, and largely concerns itself with taxing mining companies and using the revenue to maintain emergency response and safety facilities. The government itself employs relatively few people; many functions which it would provide on other worlds are instead provided by mining companies themselves, or by service corporations paid by syndicates.

Society & Customs

For a world with a young, hard-working, predominantly male population, a surprising emphasis is placed on politeness. Even somebody about to punch you out in a workman's bar will address you as 'friend' right up the point where he hits you. Perhaps it's just a side effect of living and working in cramped habs where the very air outside wants to dissolve your body.

Knofudu's society is otherwise quite rough and ready. A significant portion of the population are offworld miners or support workers, who want little more than somewhere to drink, somewhere to watch or play gravball and somewhere to sleep. Society caters for them.

Population Centres

40 townships of aboput 50,000 people each, dwelling in pressure habitats.

Military Ground Forces

The closest thing Knofudu has to ground forces are the Emergency Response Reserve, citizens who train part-time to augment the emergency services in time of severe crisis. Their training is mainly focussed on logistical transport, medical aid, disaster relief and crowd control, but they are armed equivalent to light infantry, and are centrally organised. A portion of them are kept on alert in orbital stations, with shuttles to deploy them if required. The majority would only be mobilised to respond to a large, ongoing crisis, a process which might take several days.

System Navy

Knofudu has a single squadron of two-seat TL-13 light fighters stationed in an orbital. They are responsible for patrol and defence of planetary space.
