A Maorin Junker is a class of ships used by the Maorin Starfarers, a group of merchants centered on the Maorin Stat. These ships are not a "class" of ship in the traditional sense, but are a collection of ships all operated by a single polity for purposes of trade. Apart from the cultural unity of their operators, these vessels vary widely.

Most, but not all, examples of this class are 1,000 tons or less. Many are built on ancient configurations of Vilani standard hull designs. Most are capable of atmospheric entry. Many are equipped for Jump-2 travel. Almost all are heavily armed, since they cannot rely on the protection of any polity. Those Junkers that are equipped to carry Medium and High Passages often have seperate passenger areas completely isolated from crew quarters and operational decks.

History & Background[edit]

Junker is the slightly insulting name given by spacers and starport officials to the ancient, jury-rigged vessels of the Maorin Starfarers. Offically they are designated as Type MN (merchant, non-standard) in Imperial registeries. Despite the scorn sometimes heaped upon them by planetbound humans, the goods traded by these ships are an important component in the local interstellar economy.

Although typically operating as individual ships (like any other merchant) small fleets of these vessels sometimes can be encountered. Since the crews of Maorin Junkers are all related, loyalty and unity of purpose is greater than on typical merchant vessels. Wild rumors abound of non-mercantile activities of these vessels: space piracy, mining rogue asteroids not on standard starcharts, following herds of space whales, etc.
