The Laboratory Chemsniffer is capable of identifying the chemical makeup of a sample. It is less effective in that it receives its sample from the "out gassing" of chemicals that occurs from the surface of many substances. It will not detect the chemical makeup of items in sealed containers nor the makeup of substances with a low probability of out-gassing, like metals at room temperature. It does not require that a sample be damaged or fragmented to determine its makeup. It is much more likely to detect the differences between two similar organic compounds than a portable chemsniffer, due to the larger computer database available for its comparison. This device is most likely to be available in any laboratory where the ability to determine the chemical composition of substances is desired.
