The Gravitic Enhanced Mass Spectrometer (GEMS) is a high precision device that can measure the atomic mass of the constituents of complex substances. As with most simple mass spectrometers, sampling a solid requires the destruction of a small piece of the substance that is being sampled, usually no more than a few grams. GEMS can also be used to provide a detailed analysis of the composition of a mixture of gases. Like most modern sensor devices the GEMS requires a computer hookup and database of standardize substances to function. It is unlikely to make much of that sample of Unobtainium recently discovered at an undisclosed Ancient site.
