Forward Operating Bases of the Royal Caledonian Navy

Caledonian Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) serve as centers of Caledonian navy scouting and reconnaissance activity outside of Caledonian starspace. They are destinations for convoys from foreign states, assembly points for convoys into pirate-infested territory, and above all, logistic staging points for major Caledonian fleet movements outside the Principality. They are the Principality's first line of defense. Several - Gaajpaadje, Tsanesi and Mulkins, currently - are reinforced with four extra Light Frigates, a extra squadron of eight additional "Dispatch Boats" for communications, and a larger allotment of tankers and other auxiliaries to support potential movements by much larger fleets from home space.

Note that rarely are all of a FOB's ships on station at a given time; generally 15-25% of the vessels on a FOB are detached for refits and overhauls at a Caledonian shipyard. Half of the AOR-L class ships, and at least half of the smaller auxiliaries, will be rotating back to the Principality to pick up fresh supplies at any given time (usually escorted by a sloop, or more if tensions are running high).

The carrier and station tankers, however, always rotate with vessels in Caledon.

FOB Organization[edit]

While every FOB is different, they tend to be organized as follows:

  • 1 Light Carrier
  • 4 Light Frigates
  • 16 Sloops
  • 4 AOR-L Replenishment vessels
  • Eight "Dispatch Boats" - communications packets
  • 6 Station Tankers
  • Roughly 20 smaller auxiliaries - repair, cargo and depot ships of various types.
