The New Era 1248 period is an alternate timeline in which Virus Fleets conquered Lucan's Imperium and used it as a base of operations. Lucan somehow arranged to be uploaded as an intelligent and self-aware Virus strain which dominated the Virus Fleet with subservient copies.
