THYMIAMATA[edit]

I will be adding to this page in the near future, but here is a quick and dirty background of the city, based on the Martian city development sequence given in both the Soldier's Companion and Conklin's Atlas of the Worlds,

Population is 96,000 in the city, with additional population on the Grand Canals to the south and some in the immediate area of the city on the Dead Canals.

Government is a Weak Prince with a Strong Merchants Council. The current prince is 8 Martian years old, and has 3 years to go before Coming of Age. His father was assassinated by the Ground Cleansers for welcoming the American trading presence and establishing good relations with the United States. This has left the prince with a strong hatred for the Ground Cleansers and a passion to continue his father's policies, which have brought considerable increased wealth and prestige to the city. As this is in line with what the merchants would like to see, a peaceful transfer of power is anticipated. While the city has a mixed economy, the mercantile activity is the predominant one.

Economy: As stated, the economy is Mixed with a tendency towards mercantile activity. The city is Honest, the merchants viewing corruption as bad for business, and Wealthy.

Army: The Army quality is Excellent due to the pressure from the desert nomads living in the area of the Dead Canals and the High Martians in the highlands to the west. The total forces are 14 bands of city infantry, 7 bands of Hill Martian cavalry, and a total of 28 guns. The guns are being upgraded by purchases from the United States. (See New Flash from November of 1889). The quality of the Mercenary forces are also Excellent, with 7 bands of mercenary infantry and 7 bands of Hill Martian cavalry.

Fleet: The fleet quality is Trained, with a fleet value of 9 times £40,000. I am have not yet started on the fleet, as I am working out how much assistance that the government has received from the US. There is not provision in the design sequence for Canal Naval Forces, but those will be present too, and again will be benefiting from US assistance.

The attitude of the ruling class and populace as a whole towards the Americans is Very Friendly, and towards humans, except for Belgians, as Friendly. The trade with the US has greatly benefited the city.

The city, while part of the Tossian Empire, has maintained considerable autonomy due to its location at the end of two Grand Canals and the junction of 5 Dead Canals. Tossian control of the cities on the canals to the south is a major factor in recognizing Tossian control, as long as it is not too controlling. Taxes are paid to the Tossian government and troops are furnished if requested. The Tossian Ambassador is a factor in city politics, but no a major one. The ruling council and the prince are not interested in giving Tossia offense.
