Each ship is required to be registered with a port as part of the standard Ships Papers showing date and place of registration.

Description

The Registration Papers are one of the pieces of standard ship administration that will be inspected by the port authorities and those other authorities that may, from time-to-time, board the vessel. The document must contain the following information:

• Where the ship is registered
• The index number of the entry in that register
• Who the declared owner of the vessel was at the time of registration
• The Registered Tonnage of the vessel
• The classification of the vessel's proposed usage is required in some jurisdictions

Entries do not lapse, but may be removed by declaring the vessel Wrecked, Scrapped or Abandoned.

Ships are usually required to display the port of registration and index number on the exterior of the vessel.
