Powerplants in the New Earth System are of two main types:
- Chemical
- Nuclear Fusion
There is a very limited use of fission reactors for the creation of specific isotopes for use in medicine, etc. Generally, they are not cost-effective.
Fusion Powerplants[edit]
Ranging from 4 dTons upwards, the largest versions currently readily available are 72 dTons. Larger versions are possible, and the largest vessels' and many civil plants exceed this size considerably - but are one-off constructions.
Below 4 dTons, the effectiveness of the powerplant drops off dramatically as more and more of the energy generated is used to stop fusion bottle melting the powerplant.
Despite the reputation, the fusion bottles of powerplants do not explode in nuclear fireworks when they fail. This may be academic for the occupants of the engine-room itself, but is vitally important for those occupying the rest of the structure.
