An abbreviation of Hepta-Squid, the Heptid is native to New Earth and has found it way on to the Human dinner plate.
Description[edit]
The Biyumba's Heptid described in the side panel is a typical example of the family and was the first discovered. There are over 40 species known to science. The smallest, the Shaggy Heptid is highly poisonous and should not be eaten.
Every example (except the Shaggy Heptid) is a pack hunter swimming in relatively large shoals and following the huge shoals of their prey species. By contrast, the Shaggy Heptid is a tiny solitary ambush predator that lurks amid various native seaweeds.
Heptids have 7-fold symmetry - Of the seven arms, three are long and used for snaring prey at a distance; four of which are then used for manipulating the prey into the razor-sharp mouthparts.
Heptids are not particularly discriminating as to the prey taken. They will generally attack anything under 50% of their size.
