Ares is an unexpected location for life. Even more interesting is that it is all related to a type of extremophile creature found near the south pole of neighbouring New Earth.
There are 12 types of Aresian that have been discovered to date and all are located near the north pole (80 degrees north or higher) of Ares. They are all associated with the polar aquifers and all use chemicals dissolved in the aquifers to drive their bio-chemistry.
- Seep Aresian: Mats that flourish when the seeps are liquid and freeze into the ice over-winter. As the seeps in the Wet Valley are all heavily contaminated with mineral salts the average temperature at which these are active is about 210 Kelvin. It should be noted that these creatures form mats that can be very slippery on steep cliffsides. Care should be taken when studying them.
- Geyser Aresians: These are related to the polar vents and are able to withstand temperatures up to (in one species) 400 Kelvin. The Geyser Aresians constitute 7 of the 12 species.
- Aquifer Aresians: The remaining 4 species are all creatures that have colonised (contaminated) the polar aquifer on Ares. They can live at depths of many kilometres.
