Term used by intelligence organizations to refer to the unintended consequences of their operations. Usually blowback occurs when an agency indulges in behavior that is considered illegal or immoral within the contexts of either its own controlling government or by the target of its operations. When an agent of a lawful government, in the quest for expediency or advantage within the already murky world of espionage, operates in such a fashion, the result is usually a drastic if not violent form of retaliation from the injured party in either a legal manner, or in a ruthless manner commensurate with the violation.
