The origin is a reference to the fact that the author has wound up creating this ship class in a variety of game systems, each time revising it and its backstory to be legal in and consistent with that universe. Is the original Hummingbird a dimension-hopper, is it from some far-away polity using skip drive, or did its pilot just make up some long tales to hide how she came across such an unusual design? Canonically (so far as there can be canon for a fan design), the original stops showing up before anyone can determine the answer.
