The Imperial Navy used fighter craft, but Vilani fighter doctrine was not very aggressive. A fighter squadron’s function was to emerge from its mother ship, remain at a distance from the enemy, add to the weight of the fleet’s missile volleys, and then return for reloading. As a result, Vilani fighter pilots tended to be more lightly trained and to have less esprit de corps than their Terran counterparts – a fatal flaw once the Terrans built their own fighter wings and their own (much more aggressive) fighter doctrine.
