Commercial Competencies
The Stafford Works Pty is an intra-system corporation that specializes in military equipment, from small arms through military vehicles.
Their primary customers are the Caledonian military, as well as export business to neighboring systems and commercial sales to civilians (on systems that allow civilian weapons ownership).
Governance & Organization
The Stafford Works is an amalgamation, via centuries of mergers, of many smaller concerns, most of which started as clan-owned enterprises. As such, the enterprise is governed by a council of representatives from the various "legacy" enterprises. This council elects a chief executive (entitled the "Earl", although the position is not itself connected in any way to the Caledonian nobility).
The current "Earl" is Iain Calhoun (41st Baron of Strathmuir).
Subsidiaries
Stafford has absorbed dozens of companies, many of which previously absorbed many earlier concerns. Stafford Works' legacy includes a very large list of companies. Most of these mergers have had their brands absorbed into Stafford, and have long since lost any formal identity.
Exceptions are subsidiaries that are outside Stafford's core, heavy-industrial weapons and vehicle manufacturing. The major ones include:
- Thompson Brothers Ltd: A manufacturer of electronic equipment especially for military communication and fire control
- Halberd and Carlisle: H&C, acquired in 1200 CE, manufactures situational awareness electronics.
- Moore Brothers: A recent acquisiting (1266), Moore Brothers builds recreational vehicles, mostly for the civilian market.
- SKD: A manufacturer of down-market firearms, mostly for the export and low-tech civlian market catering mosty to systems in the TL9019 ranges.
Stockholders
Stock ownership (1116), as usual in Caledonian big business, is via a complex, carefully negotiated web of Caledonian clan pools.
Clan Murdo of Dunleaven - localted on Caledon - owns the largest single stake (25%).
