'''Applying Die Results''' - Results are given in terms of "Grades" (Rows on the chart) and "Tracks" (Columns on the chart).  For example, an O2 Non-Command Lieutenant who rolled High Success would get a result of "Up 1 Grade/Left 1 Track".  That means he/she would be promoted to O3, and moved to the Executive Officer track.

'''Going "Off The Chart"''' - When a character is in the "Command Billet" rank column (commanding ships), and they get a further "Left 1 Track" result, it will take an additional "Right 1" track to move him/her onto the "Adjutant" track; once one is esconced in command, it's harder to get out.

However, once one is on the "Staff" (rightmost) track, all future promotions will be on the Staff track.

===Example===

An officer leaves the Academy at age 21 with (Classic Traveller) Intelligence of 7, Leadership 1, Ship Tactics 0 = Total 8 and a rank of O1 (Ensign). During his term, he acquires extra levels of Leadership and Ship Tactics, raising his score to 10.

After his first term, he rolls a "7 - which is "Success". His grade becomes "O2", and his column doesn't change. He's a "Sub-Lieutenant" in a shipboard, non-command billet.

During his second term, he acquires two more points of Ship Tactics, raising his total score to "12". He rolls a "5", which is "High Success"; his grade moves up 1, his track moves left.  He's now an "O3" in the "Adjustant Billet" column - a First Lieutenant on a sloop or small auxiliary (referee's discretion).

During his third term, he acquires another level of Leadership, raising his total score to a "13".  He rolls for promotion, and gets an "8" - "Success", which yields "Grade Up 1/Track NA".  He is promoted to O4, and remains in the Adjutant Billet column; he's the First Lieutenant on a Destroyer, Corvette or small auxiliary.

During his fourth term, he gets two levels of leadership, raising his total to a "15".  He rolls for promotion, rolling a "3" - "Outstanding Success", resulting in "Grade Up 1/Track Left 1".  He's now an "O5", "Corvette Captain", commanding a Destroyer, system defense Corvette or a mid-sized auxiliary.

In his fifth term, he gets two levels of Ship Tactics, raising him to a "17". He rolls a "10" - "Success".  This yields "Grade Up 1/Track Right 1" - he's promoted to "O6", and moves a column to the right, the "Adjutant Billet" column; he's now the "First Lieutenant" on a Battleship or Carrier.
+
'''Note about First Lieutenants'' - the longer a First Lieutenant remains in grade, the larger the ship he/she is second in command.
 +
* First term:  Sloop, Destroyer, Corvette, Surveillance Ship, AXL
 +
* Second Term: Frigate (heavy or light), AXH or other large auxiliary
 +
* Third and subsequent terms:  Battleship or Carrier.

In his sixth term, the promotion number changes to Intelligence+Leadership+'''Fleet''' TacticsHis Intelligence is still 7, his Leadership is 5, and he's acquired one level of Fleet Tactics over his career, for a total of 13.  He rolls a "7" - "Success"This becomes "Grade Up 1/Track Right 1"; he becomes an O7, and shifts a column to the right; since there are no shipboard non-command O7 ranks, he moves to the "Staff" column.  He becomes the commander of an RCN Base.
+
===Staff Officer Career Progression===
 +
When officers of rank O3 through O8 are moved to Staff billets, they roll for promotion every term against their (INT+Bureaucracy)Success results in a promotion; failure, in remaining in current grade (through O6) or retirement (O7 and O8)At O8, outstanding success results in promotion to Staff O9; any other result is retirement.

For his seventh term, he rolls a "5", which is "High Success" - he moves up a grade to O8, and stays in the staff track. He's now "Chief of Station Staff" - the head staff officer for one of the [[Royal Caledon Navy Stations|navy's four stations]].
+
Staff officer billets are as follows:
 +
* O3 - Junior staff Lieutenant.
 +
* O4 - Staff Lieutenant on a Base, Task Force or Station department (Logistics, Intelligence, Operations or Administration)
 +
* O5 - Senior Staff Lieutenant in a Base, task force or station department (Logistics, Intelligence, Operations or Administration)
 +
* O5 - Commander of a RCN Task Force, Base or Station Department (Logistics, Intelligence, Operations or Administration)
 +
* O7 - Commander of an RCN base, or Chief of Staff for a Task Force.
 +
* O8 - Chief of Station staff, or member of the central Naval Staff.
 +
* O9 - Chief of Naval Staff.  Head of all naval staff; there can be only one.

For his eighth term, he rolls a "9" - "Success".  He's promoted, but remains in the staff track; he's now chief of an RCN staff department

In Term 9, he rolls an "11" - "Success".  This yields "Retirement".  He retires at O9.

Overview

The officer corps of the Royal Caledonian Navy is incredibly competitive, subject to several stages of ruthless weeding-out. The goal is to create ship and fleet commanders who are peerless combat leaders.

Entry: Graduates of the Royal Caledonian Naval Academy start at age 21 at O1 on the "Non-Command Billet column" (rank "Ensign"), below.

Ranks

Ranks in the Royal Caledonian Navy fall into three broad bands:

  • Junior Officers -
  • Command Officers -
  • Flag Officers -

Junior Officers

All graduates of the Naval Academy start as O1 "Ensigns". The end of the first term is a major pass-fail point; ensigns who don't show the capacity to be combat leaders are shunted into the Royal Caledon Navy Warrant Officer Roles and Titles corps, to serve the rest their careers as technical specialists. Success in proving one is an exceptional combat leader leads to promotion to the "Command Officer" ranks. "First Lieutenant" (O4) rank - serving as the second-in-command of a ship - is the next major pass-fail point; showing great aptitude as a leader of men in combat is non-negotiable for advancing to command rank. It is possible for an officer to spend decades as a Lieutenant without advancing to command rank or being shunted into staff work.

  • O1 - Ensign
  • O2 - Sub-Lt
  • O3 - Lt
  • O4 - First Lt

Command Officers

These officers command ships - from smaller warships and auxiliaries as a Corvette Captain (O5), to squadrons as a Commodore (O8). Command Officers are to a person intelligently aggressive, and masters of the art and craft of space warfare.

  • O5 - Lieutenant Commanding*
  • O6 - Corvette Captain
  • O7 - Frigate Captain
  • O8 - Captain of the Line

Flag Officers

These officers command the Navy's Task Forces, Stations, and the Navy itself.

  • O9 - Rear Admiral
  • O10 - Vice Admiral
  • O11 - Admiral
  • O12 - Admiral of the Fleet

Staff Officers

Officers above the rank of O3 who "fall off the command track" move into Staff billets. Their separate career progression is noted below.

Promotion

Referee's Note - To account for different game and dice systems, a fairly abstract promotions system is provided here.

It involves adding a character's Intelligence, Leadership, and either Ship Tactics (O6 or below) or Fleet Tactics (O7 and above) ratings, and rolling against the result.

  • Outstanding Success is 1/4 or less of the number arrived at above
  • High Success is 1/2 or less of the number above.
  • Success is less than the number arrived at above
  • Failureis greater than the number arrived at.

Note that the number will change as the officer gets additional Ship/Fleet Tactics and Leadership skill levels through his/her career.

'Note about First Lieutenants - the longer a First Lieutenant remains in grade, the larger the ship he/she is second in command.
  • First term: Sloop, Destroyer, Corvette, Surveillance Ship, AXL
  • Second Term: Frigate (heavy or light), AXH or other large auxiliary
  • Third and subsequent terms: Battleship or Carrier.

Staff Officer Career Progression

When officers of rank O3 through O8 are moved to Staff billets, they roll for promotion every term against their (INT+Bureaucracy). Success results in a promotion; failure, in remaining in current grade (through O6) or retirement (O7 and O8). At O8, outstanding success results in promotion to Staff O9; any other result is retirement.

Staff officer billets are as follows:

  • O3 - Junior staff Lieutenant.
  • O4 - Staff Lieutenant on a Base, Task Force or Station department (Logistics, Intelligence, Operations or Administration)
  • O5 - Senior Staff Lieutenant in a Base, task force or station department (Logistics, Intelligence, Operations or Administration)
  • O5 - Commander of a RCN Task Force, Base or Station Department (Logistics, Intelligence, Operations or Administration)
  • O7 - Commander of an RCN base, or Chief of Staff for a Task Force.
  • O8 - Chief of Station staff, or member of the central Naval Staff.
  • O9 - Chief of Naval Staff. Head of all naval staff; there can be only one.
