Revision as of 13:13, 7 May 2024

An alternate Hull Classification Scheme could be as follows:

ACS: Auxiliary/Adventure Class: 100 - 2,500 tons
BCS: Battle/Bulk Class: 1,000 - 25,000 tons
CCS: Capital Class: 10,000 - 250,000 tons
FCS: Fleet Class: 100,000 - 2,500,000 tons

In each code range, the Hull Code would range from A-Z, but at the next higher order of magnitude:

  • An ACS coded ship: A=100 ton through Z=2,400 ton
  • An BCS coded ship: B=1,000 ton through Z=24,000 ton
  • An CCS coded ship: C=10,000 ton through Z=240,000 ton
  • An FCS coded ship: F=100,000 ton through Z=2,400,000 ton

The overlap in the cases above allows for the classification of some smaller vessels in the larger vessels scheme, when necessary.
So when clarity is needed:

  • An ACS coded ship can be prefaced with "A-" before the code (AA-AZ)
  • An BCS coded ship can be prefaced with "B-" before the code (BA-BZ)
  • An CCS coded ship can be prefaced with "C-" before the code (CA-CZ)
  • An FCS coded ship can be prefaced with "F-" before the code (FA-FZ)

Thus:

  • Hull Codes AK thru AU would all fall under the Hull Code BA in the next higher classification when necessary, and more specified granularity is not needed.
  • Hull Codes AV thru AZ would all fall under the Hull Code BB in the next higher classification when necessary, and more specified granularity is not needed.
Likewise:
  • Hull Codes BK thru BU would all fall under the Hull Code CA in the next higher classification when necessary, and more specified granularity is not needed.
  • Hull Codes BV thru BZ would all fall under the Hull Code CB in the next higher classification when necessary, and more specified granularity is not needed.
