Fairmile Aerospace, established in 535, has for centuries been one of the Principality of Caledon's primary starship builders.

History

Roger Hall - a student at The Royal University's Armstrong Center - hatched an idea for more efficiently venting waste heat from jump drives during travel in jump space, saving significant space on smaller spacecraft. Rather than take a job with Armstrong Shipbuilding, he cannily sought out funding from two large clan credit pools - from Clan Fairleigh and Clan Miles - and patented his own design. At 25, he founded Fairmile - named after his patrons - and began producing first starship engines in a large hangar in the Invergarry neighborhood in Selkirk, (on Caledon's.

Seeking more space - and less competition from the yards already established on Caledon - Hall moved the operation to the newly-opened Stirling system, taking a royal land grant, tax breaks and a small surge of colonists to help build what became an immense commercial complex and up-port.

Clan Hall of Stirling is today one of Caledon's leading families - led by its current scions, Andrew, Iain, Margaret, Daniel and Sheila. The five Halls serve as the "board of directors", operating with a Chief Executive (who, out of executive prudence, is never a hall, and hasn't been in nearly 300 years) who handles the daily operations of the corporation. (The CEO is currently Stuart Hajib).

Operations

The main shipbuilding operation is still on Stirling, on a 3000km/square commercial estate that houses a downport, a "workshed" big enough to allow two construction lines for 200-ton (streamlined) vessels, and "Fairmile", a company town housing most of the company's 15,000 workers and their families.

Fairmile also operates a small craft production plant on Rob Roy, and a repair bay on the Caledon up port.

The company maintains sales offices on all major worlds in the Principality, as well as in the Confederacy of Duncinae and the Carillan Assembly.
