  1. EXTERNAL LINK: While going though the recommended reading list on the Traveller Wiki, I was struck by the lack of sources from outside science fiction. I was wondering, what non-sci-fi sources do you draw inspiration from? What do these sources say/show/do that that you try to reflect IYTU?

Notes (2008)[edit]

Should the primary sources be devided between sources that was directly influencing Clasic Traveller and after? While I am a big Bujold fan, her work for example was not as important as Niven's Known Space or Asimov's Foundation in the look and feel of the Third Imperium.

As well, Ghost in the Shell should be divided between Stand Alone Complex, Anime Movies and Manga, as all three have a different voice. SAC is the most Traveller friendly imho.

The division between primary and secondary sources is based upon a general consensus (mostly mine) of how closely the source resembles Classic Traveller, regardless of the order of appearance. With an entirely arbitrary line between the two. So Bujold is on the primary sources list for the same reason David Drake and David Webber are, that the Mercenary company is a strong Traveller campaign trope, and these series are all excellent examples of that.
Do you think we should divide the primary sources list into primary influence (stuff before 1980 or so that obviously influenced Traveller and the Third Imperium) and contemporary influence (stuff after 1977, which didn't influence the original Traveller, but current player would find useful as a fiction reference)?

I was thinking that a division would be useful so that people who are new to Traveller will understand why design decisions where made. For example, why the cyberpunk genre (and technology) did not get a look in, the lack of nanotechnology (and grey goo scenerio). And of cause the total mishandling of computers by the writers of the period and the game designers (No one envisioned an iPod that would be more powerful as a Model 1/bis).

So I'm thinking of having the division of "original sources", of books & movies from before 1980 or so, "primary sources" for later items which are Traveller-esque (like Bujold and Babylon 5), and "secondary sources" for other material which gets frequent mention on the various forums.

That works.
