Details / Specifications
Laurent's Reef is a jumpspace phenomenon existing on the trailing edge of the Where The Stars End region. It has listed dimensions of around 13 parsecs coreward-rimward by about 7 parsecs spinward-trailing and is reckoned to affect an area of around fourty parsecs. It is located within a Shadow Rift region called the Empty Reach. The extensive astrophysical survey programs of the region carried out by the University of Tal Varisa have allowed the indirect confirmation of the presence of the anonymaly. Studies of the region are ongoing, though no definitive conclusions have yet been reached concerning its nature.
Effects
The effects of Laurent's Reef were recorded by the Last Armada as they passed close to it on their voyage towards the Distant Fringe.
- Any vessels attempting to cross the reef experienced repeated operational problems with their jump drives and faced a significant risk of experiencing a misjump.
History
The phenomena was encountered by the Last Armada prior to 2255AD and was named for Admiral Patience Laurent, the Armada's commander. Almost all details about it were originally drawn from fragmentary notes recorded in the Zelig Journal and for many it remained apocryphal or mythical. Its existence was confirmed by the University of Tal Varisa Deep Sky Program through a process of indirect observation. It became a confirmed physical feature, rather than romantic historical speculation, following publication of the "Where The Stars End" Astrographic Survey in 5550AD.
