The smallest Ships of the Imperial Army are under the charge of a Lieutenant Commander, if not commanded by a more senior officer. Military Lieutenant Commanders may also hold staff appointments.
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Army Ground Force Command (GFC) is Major.
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Army Close Orbit and Airspace Control Command (COACC) is Squadron Leader.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The rank of Commander has a long history from its first inception in the wet-navies of pre-spaceflight planetary naval services. It is shortened from the old term Master and Commander.
This rank's name indicates that the holder deputised for that commander or was their second-in-command.
