The Yileans of Gashikan (Gashikan 2732) are a technologically sophisticated Minor Human Race with a human appearance.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Yileans are a minor human race, native to Gashikan (Gashikan 2732), a world beyond the border of the Imperium. They were founders of the Second Empire of Gashikan, which occupied part of the Gashikan, Trenchans, and Mendan sectors, as well as its successor state the Third Empire of Gashikan. They are notable for being one of the most influential Human minor races outside Imperial space, and for their implacable hostility to the Vargr who surround them.

Physiology[edit]

Pure Yileans have skin of a striking bluish tint.

Culture[edit]

Yileans appreciate centralised, authoritarian government and deplore chaos.

Naming[edit]

Yileans use a system of given and family names with the given name coming first. The high degree of cultural uniformity among the Yileans means that there are fewer than 1,000 last names. Most last names have two or three syllables, with Glika, Velfatir, and Kashri being the three most common. The majority of male given names begin with an "ab", "aa", "ra", or "ga" sound and are normally two or three syllables long; examples include Raskin and Galorak. Most female given names begin with a "oh", "ee", or "yi" sound and are typically three or four syllables long; for example, Olearan, Yiveal, or Elarina.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Aside from a few isolated islands, the entire land area of Gashikan is part of a single supercontinent. By the time the Yileans reached TL-3, they had created a single planetary state known, simply, as the Gashikan. Although this state occasionally collapsed due to rebellion or disaster, it was always rebuilt. Over millennia, Yileans came to consider the concept of multiple governments with great distaste, and a lack of strong authority as absolute horror.

Gashikan was contacted by the Vilani and was made part of the First Imperium, like so many other worlds. The coming of the Long Night was particularly difficult on the Yileans, as the Vargr raiders did not have far to go. The Yileans founded the First Empire of Gashikan in -1784 in an attempt to defend themselves. This lasted until -1658 when a strong Vargr naval force attacked Gashikan itself using nuclear missiles.

In -1648, recovering from the assault, the Yileans founded the Second Empire of Gashikan. Believing the Vargr to be an unstable and unsuitable influence, the Empire forced the removal or destruction of all Vargr within their empire. This included a campaign of biological warfare, the Wolvesbane Project.

The Second Empire collapsed in 1070 due to economic problems and a massive civil war. The outcome of the Gashikan civil war resulted in the reformation of the polity as the Third Empire of Gashikan, though not all members of the original Empire have rejoined the reformed state at this time. The Commonwealth of Mendan was an important subregion of the Empire which seceded, and chose to join instead with the Julian Protectorate; the Commonwealth is one of the few regions where Yilean and Vargr peoples manage to coexist relatively peacefully, whereas the cultures of most Yilean worlds are notorious for their anti-Vargr hatred.
