Year
A Year is a unit of time.
Description (Specifications)
An Imperial year (a "standard year") is a frequently used large unit of time. It is used to overcome difficulties caused by having non-uniform local times on each world and system.
The Imperial Calendar provides a handy reference tool.
Equivalent Metrics
Other interstellar cultures have different values for a year, generally based on the orbital period of their homeworld around its star.
- Chten (Zhodani): 275.2 standard days.
- Ftahea (Aslan): 320 standard days.
- Pim!bigr (K'kree): 440 standard days.
- Terran year (Solomani): 365.25 standard days.
Term Usage Example
Construction times for large starships are generally measured in years.
History & Background (Dossier)
Technologists found the year useful as the concept of the Technology Level and standardized ideas about sophont society development began to take form.[1]
Imperial & Solomani Term Usage
The Solomani define the year as the orbital period of Terra around Sol, the system's primary star. It is equal to 365.25 standard days.
Modern Imperial usage bases the year on the orbital period of Capital round its sun, which happens to have an almost identical orbital period to that of Terra around Sol. It was broadly adopted within the Imperium following the Solomani Rim War, in order to avoid the use of specifically Terranocentric metrics.[2]
