Description (Specifications)

Winston class Light Cruisers serve with the navy of the Winston Democracy, a polity lying to rimward of the Solomani Confederation. The vessel is built around a huge fusion power plant large enough to charge the big spinal mounted particle accelerator that runs the length of the ship's keel. The rest of its firepower is limited to turrets. Winstons are fundamentally gun platforms: they are slow and have little agility but punch far above their weight.

The vessel is a TL-10 design.

1.	Tonnage	The Winston class is constructed using a 15,000 Ton hull built in a flattened sphere configuration. The hull is fully streamlined, giving a good atmospheric performance that is further enhanced by its onboard gravitic systems. The vessel has sturdy retractable legs, allowing surface landings. There are 10 airlocks located around the vessel. The cargo hold is accessed by large doors and has a loading ramp.
2.	Crew	x164 personnel. x11 command, x47 engineering, x61 gunnery, x30 service, and x15 security. Accommodations There are 84 staterooms. All quarters are double occupancy. Accommodations aboard a Winston are considered to be inferior. Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems. There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Individual sections of the hull can be sealed off. There are multiple emergency lockers.
3.	Performance	The vessel mounts a Jump-1 drive, a Maneuver-1 drive, and a Power Plant-9, giving performance of Jump-1 and 1-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 1. The internal fuel tankage is sufficient for two consecutive Jump-1s and gives the power plant four weeks duration. The engineering section has a main control room. Ladders, gantries and platforms give access to the machinery. The jump drive utilizes a lanthanum hull grid. The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
4.	Electronics	The vessel is fitted with an efficient Model 4/fib computer: no backup computer is installed. There are multiple workstations and control points throughout the vessel. The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, an advanced sensor array, and an avionics suite. It is equipped with a sophisticated ECM package.
5.	Hardpoints	150 hardpoints. The listed battery groupings are standard configurations for the class. Alternative battery groupings may be designated for specific missions.
6.	Armament	The normal weapons fit-out for a Winston class is: x1 Type J spinal Particle Accelerator. x20 triple beam laser turrets, typically grouped into two batteries of 10 linked turrets. x20 dual plasma gun turrets, typically grouped into two batteries of 10 linked turrets. x60 triple missile turrets, typically grouped into six batteries of 10 linked turrets.
7.	Defenses	The hull is not armored. x20 triple sandcaster turrets, typically grouped into two batteries of 10 linked turrets. The vessel is not fitted with screens or other passive defensive systems.
8.	Craft	The vessel carries no subcraft.
9.	Fuel Treatment	The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 4,350 Tons. The hull is fitted with fuel scoops. The vessel is equipped with a fuel purification plant that can refine all onboard fuel in a few hours: the plant is operated and maintained by the engineering crew.

History & Background (Dossier)

Winston class Light Cruisers are part of The Democratic People's Defense Forces, the military of the Winston Democracy. They are designed to operate alongside Stormbringer class Fleet Tenders. They carry enough fuel for two jumps, to allow them to keep pace with the Stormbringers.

Accommodations aboard Winstons are notoriously poor, with cramped and inconveniently sited quarters and limited personal storage space.
