Wesaswek is a garden world with an environment conducive to most sophonts. The system has a population between 100 million and a billion sophonts. This world designated as an Amber Zone. Caution is advised since the world has an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that are not well understood and might be a danger to a visitor. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Lentuli Subsector of Empty Quarter Sector and in the Domain of Antares. Wesaswek, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estates of an Imperial knight and a baronet, and the fiefdoms of a baron and a viscount. All four are members of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world. 100% of the world's population is the Minor Race Bwap.

Astrography and Planetology

Wesaswek, part of the Marhaban Cluster, is a major Bwap world, continually inhabited for a touch less than 4,000 years.

All the asteroids, comets, and small bodies of the system have been grouped together and organized into mathematically elegant orbital patterns - justified with ‘ease of navigation and exploitation’ claims, but really done to soothe the Bwap mind, which simply HATES clutter. It is rather amusing - and a bit frightening - to bypass an Organized Asteroid Cluster (OAC), with every rock sorted by size, shape, composition, and albedo, synchronized in a perfectly spherical four-layer pattern - each with a high-output warning beacon and a hive of automated “worker bees” keeping the rocks in flawless formation.

History and Background

While Marhaban (Empty Quarter 0426) is the heart and soul of Bwap civilization, Wesaswek is the financial and political nexus. The environment is tuned to the 98%-100% humidity suitable to Bwap, but that same comfort level for their race makes the world a miserable place to be for humans and Vargr.

Still, if you can stand the bureaucracy, the regimentation, and the endless instance on the Proper Way of Doing Things, the high tech level does have its rewards.

-- Alvin Plummer. "The Preferred Worlds of the Empty Quarter, 993 Imperial." Stellar Reaches 21 (2013): 62.

Econony

Wesaswek is a powerful and influential world within the Imperial Empty Quarter, and is held in great respect by Bwaps across Imperial Space and beyond - only Marhaban (Empty Quarter 0426)herself has greater prestige. Along with Pamushgar, Lazisar (Empty Quarter 1233), Marhaban, Ka-aswa (Empty Quarter 1230) and Ushmigad (Empty Quarter 0638), Wesaswek is a driving force of the local Imperial economy in the Empty Quarter. Wesaswek's architecture and living standards are a good deal higher than in most of the Empty Quarter, and approach the lifestyles of Core Sector.

A high-tech sanctuary in a low-tech sector, it is more deeply traditional, yet less structured, than the motherworld of Marhaban. Huge weather control stations help to manage the planetary humidity to Bwap levels of comfort.

The environment is quite humid, thanks to extensive terraforming, weather control (“more drizzling and stifling humidity, please ”) and the Mother of All Humidifiers that hovers over the major Bwap cities.

Wesaswek became very wealthy during the False Dawn (200-300 Imperial), due to her progressive high-tech industry.

World Culture

Bwaps organise themselves into crèches. The crèche is where Bwaps will select a mate, where the eggs will be guarded and tended to, and where the young will be educated by the Satha-a-atta-wapawab (Elders of the Creche). The crèche is also the center of Bwap spirituality, and the focus point of study of the Wapawab (Tree of Life).

Point of Interest: Pesta-wasakeswasa (Weather Control Installations)

Most notable of Wesaswek's architectural wonders are the massive floating Pesta-wasakeswasa (Weather Control installations) that help keep humidity at levels comfortable to Bwap residents.

Cities

Taeswath is the third-largest city on Wesaswek (population: 8,297,111 Bwap, 20,133 non-Bwap). It is the site of Duchess Yin Imperial Downport.

World Starport (St)

Wesaswek has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

Trivia

It’s raining on Wesaswek” is the oldest known "Emptyhead" traveller joke, first recorded at 57 Imperial. Used initially as an ironical play on non-starfaring interstellar literature: the “It was raining on Mongo” fallacy. (As a simple scientific fact, it IS always raining on most of Wesaswek, most of the time.) Eventually, additional meanings were added:

  • Stating the blindingly obvious:
    • “We’d better load up on extra ammo.”
    • “And I hear that it’s raining on Wesaswek, too ”
  • A catchphrase for Empty-heads to recognize each other
  • A signal to change the subject:
    • “Do you know what Sandy’s in for?”
    • “I don’t know, but I hear that it’s raining on Wesaswek.”
  • A synonym for ‘a situation beneficial to Bwaps’.
    • “Did you see the paperwork we need to complete? How can we ever get in on the deal?”
    • “I hear that it’s raining on Wesaswek.”
