Valhalla is a world suited to becoming an agricultural world, but with a population between 10,000 and 100,000 sophonts, but lacks the capability to produce or process sufficient resources to export its projected agricultural produce. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Rhylanor Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector and in the Domain of Deneb. Valhalla, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estates of an Imperial knight and a baronet. Both are members of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world.

Geography

Valhalla is the only planet with a water ocean and 3 smaller crater seas covering roughly 50% of the surface. The water is rich in dissolved metal salts. The large metallic planetary core produces a strong magnetic field, allowing the small planet to retain a standard atmosphere; however, it is noteworthy that the core seems to spin significantly faster than the surface. The atmosphere contains a lower percentage of oxygen, only 14%, with a higher percentage of noble gases. Geology is exceptionally active, with 13 tectonic plates and several large mountain ranges. Moderate earthquakes can be expected once every 2 years in any given area. Volcanic activity is not normally violent, with exceptions. Sunsets are marked by extreme colors and patterns.

Notable Creatures

The most noted planetary denizen are the:

Lingutates
A unique species of "talking plants". These plants made verbal sounds that sound like a language. Several decades of studies have been unable to decipher any meaning to the "words" of these plants, and thus no intelligence has been ascribed to this species.
Shellat
A four-limbed crustacean with an extremely strong shell with a high-metal content. It is a local delicacy, and it is usually enjoyed by planetary visitors as well.

System Overview

The Valhalla system is characterized by its large central star, its dense, metal-rich inner planets, and its double-belt arrangement. System age is roughly 6.5 billion years.

Units

  • Orbit is in AU or planetary radii for satellites
  • Diam = diameter in miles (X 1.609 for km)
  • Dens = average density in g/cc
  • Grav = 'surface' gravity in G's
  • Rot/Rev = rotation or revolution period in hours (h), days (d), or years (y) ; tl = tide-locked
  • e = orbital eccentricity
  • Type = G:Space/FI classification
  • Anvil: Anvil is a tidally-locked rock with no atmosphere, the typical huge temperature difference between night and day, and deposits of methane-water on the night side. A high-security, subterranean prison complex is maintained within a crater at the northern pole. This prison holds the more dangerous prisoners from Valhalla and Hammer.
  • Hammer: Hammer is a smaller, colder world with large ice caps and no oceans. Like its sister world, it has a strong magnetic field which allows it to retain a thin, breathable atmosphere. Geologically, it is active but much less so than Valhalla. Its population is roughly 5,000; it is primarily scientific with a small military presence. A frontier starport exists here for supplies, and is tightly controlled by the military presence. The main settlement is Glas, a "town" burrowed into a large glacier on the northern icepack. The settlement is known primarily for scientific research and ice sculpture.
  • Inner Belt: The inner belt is a typical belt containing planetoids that are of similar makeup to the inner planets.
  • Freya: A large gas giant with a relatively sparse family of moons.
  • Outer Belt: A second planetoid belt circles between the giant planets. It appears to be made of less dense materials than the inner belt, and its planetoids have a significantly lower average size than most belts.
  • Odin: A large ice giant with a relatively sparse family of moons. Interestingly, its moons are not yet tidally locked, and are of a less dense consistency from the inner planetoids.

History & Background (Dossier)

The planet is home to a population of roughly 55,000. Most of the population either are or are descendants of enemies of the Celepina nobility. Local architecture is typically of low heights, thick walls and sometimes obvious reinforcements; more advanced structures have a marked Brutalist style. Technical levels here are typically low by most standards. Nuclear fission is the primary power source, with some homes using solar arrays mounted on spring boards.

Imperial High (Landed) Nobility

Valhalla (SM 2811), as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estates of two members of the Imperial Nobility, who are charged with overseeing the world.

Government

The government is dominated by Celepina law. The population is otherwise allowed to self-govern in local matters, but all decisions can be vetoed or altered by the planetary Governor.

The Governor is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Count of Celepina. The rank is non-hereditary, and usually considered equal to a Marquis. A Lieutenant Governor has historically been chosen to oversee each of the 5 major cities from the population by the Governor; these choices are made by a combination of election, nepotism, bribery and other factors.

The law enforcement is lenient, stepping in only if major crimes are involved. Most weapons are allowed if suitable to personal self-defense and/or hunting; laser or plasma weaponry is strictly prohibited by local citizenry, and carried regularly by the Governor's troops. Likewise, any armor beyond ballistic cloth is illegal and subject to confiscation; reflec armor is strictly prohibited, with prison sentences and high fines being imposed.

This combination of low law level and casual weaponry means that most citizens are armed, comfortable with their arms, and generally polite. Most citizens are content with pistols of various designs for day-to-day activities, and most have never drawn in anger. Armed guards are common in certain businesses. Many drinking Halls require customers to place their weapons in a secure vault before entering.

Cities and towns usually have a legislative council, elected periodically by adults older than 25 with educational certificates from the school system.

Economy

Population 55,000

All interstellar trade is conducted by the Governor. The governor typically arranges for either starship landings at designated fields within his or her personal land holdings, or uses personal shuttles to lift cargoes to orbiting starships. Small, downside fueling facilities are maintained for the Governor's use, but are not normally made available to visiting ships. The governor also controls all mail deliveries and reserves the right to examine any delivered mail.

Visiting Valhalla's surface is discouraged as a matter of policy, but some more social Governors have regularly invited Travellers to visit their estates for dinner and conversation.

The main "landing spot" is at Mansion, the Governor's main estate and home to a staff of roughly 1,000. It is an large island estate in the Ruddy Sea, the largest of the 3 smaller seas. The main Mansion Hall, the official residence, was built on a unusually regular rock substructure, making it more resistant to local geological activity.

The other population centers are:

  • Thorston, an Ocean-side town nestled between 2 dormant volcanoes: a relatively pretty resort town.
  • Hotspot, island city nearly opposite Mansion, in the Clary Sea. Home to the active volcano, Mt. Doom. (Yes, they really named it that way.) Various forms of aquaculture form the basis of local cuisine.
  • Moscow, a mining town near the Clary Sea. A depot of materials is kept here, near a secondary landing field to facilitate raw material trade. Farming and Aquaculture fields are operated for primarily local use. Several large manufacturing plants are located here.
  • Kontessa, a farming-mining town near the Squal Sea. A depot of materials is kept here, near a secondary landing field to facilitate raw material trade. Larger agricultural estates are found here, primary for export to other cities.
  • Rubal, small city on the shores of the Ruddy Sea. Financial district for the planet.

There is a basic metal-wire communication network with some redundancy in place. Radio and Vid transmissions are popular, but all stations are owned and controlled by the Governor.

Valhalla's primary export is raw metal ores, and some local foodstuffs.

Culture

Much of the typical Celepinan (Kel-e-pin-an) culture was imported. The local scripts are in Cyrillic, but the language is accented Anglic. Dress is more conservative outside the home than on Celepina. Clothing is considered practical, and the practice of wearing body paint only is considered silly by most. In the larger dance Halls, the Celepinan lack of taboos prevails, resulting in a energetic nightlife. Restrooms are unisex.

Alcohol is popular, as are some local stimulants; both are readily available and inexpensive. Media content is typically dated Celepinan or Rhylanorian features, though some local live presentations can be found live in some Halls.

Education is provided to age of 18, focusing on trade-based education. A single University exists in Rubal that allows education in finance, science and engineering. Graduates are granted the option to travel to Celepina as a Tehneetees (technician).

Individuals may enter into a recognized Bonding, a formalized romantic relationship. Such Bondings include the equivalent of a prenuptial agreement to facilitate resolution, should the Bonding be dissolved by either party. Bonding grants social acceptance for cohabitation. Bonding is allowed at age 16, but not considered appropriate until age 18. Marriage is allowed at the age of 22; marriage is essentially a social license to have children. By law and custom, a person may be married to no more than 2 spouses at one time; thus, one will encounter bonded pairs ("Pairs"), couples and triples in daily life.

Burial customs typically involve immolation, with considerable variation. Burning boats, byres and even local volcanoes are used to honor and celebrate the life of the departed. Gubernatorial customs differ; Governors are interred in the Mansion mausoleum, if not their homeworlds. Staff are typically interred on the Mansion estate in dedicated yards.

Recent History

The current Governor, Maria Alexandre, is newly appointed and relatively young at 35 years old. She has largely kept the extant Lieutenant Governors and staff in place. She is known to be friendly to the current Count, Knowln.
