Welcome (2016)

Welcome to the Traveller RPG Wiki.

Early (2016)

Thank you for your work (edits) on the site!

  • Please let me know if you have any questions.
- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 12:22, 22 January 2016 (EST)

Steve, thanks for your great typo corrections and fresh new material. Looks great!

March Task Ideas (2016)

Steve, would you like some extra jobs? There's lots to do. What you're doing is great, very much appreciated, and more than enough, but, if you are willing, I could give you some jobs that need to be done. Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 21:30, 29 February 2016 (EST)

More jobs? I just found a treasure drove of material that I'm digging my way through... What is it you have in mind?
I suppose I'm kind of what I'd like to think how you do things.. "Hey, that needs work.. why not" ..kind of unfocused in a way.Ssteve (talk) 21:55, 29 February 2016 (EST)
I like that too, Steve. I see it as a sort of immersion exercise. Here are some ideas:
  • Update sector pages to latest layout. I can transfer the layout to you if you like or show you where the layout I use is.
    • Fill in the demography parts of sector pages.
    • Fill in the territorial comparison parts of sector pages.
  • Help to create Solomani Rim sectors. Input worlds.
    • I am currently finishing up Massilia and its related domain.
  • Update older world layouts to the latest layouts. Sectors like Reaver's Deep, Iliesh, and Zarush were my first so many of those need updating.
  • Update the citation and source pages to Thomas's latest development.
  • Further develop timelines for:
    • 3I
    • Sol Confed
    • Zhod Cons
Those are a few ideas off the top of my head.
What you are doing is great. Thanks!

April (2016)

I had noticed over on Avery's Visitor Message page on COTI you had asked about a spreadsheet of all of the Noble Patent Cards given out by Marc through FFE. I mentioned to Maksim-Smelchak of the existence of the following google-doc by Bloo from COTI. It is freely editable by anyone:

Traveller Patents of Nobility:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mRGZE7RZZJrchoaudEX9-wXeZTTJves6ohYiigK2STU/edit#gid=0
The tabs at the bottom include a page that lists all known Knightly Orders, as well as all of the known T5/COTI Noble Patent Card holders (by Domain), who they belong to, and any "Character Name" to which they have been assigned.

It is not necessarily a complete listing, but it is extensive, and you should be able to export and save it as an Excel Spreadsheet.

Thanks, Ssteve (talk) 10:45, 16 April 2016 (EDT)

Uploading the Empty Quarter data (2016)

I've gotten the automated upload of the stellar data templates into the world/data pages. Would it help if uploaded all the data for Empty Quarter sector? Tjoneslo (talk) 14:25, 24 April 2016 (EDT)

Go for it...and show me how; it'll make this go a whole lot faster (except for maybe those duplicate world names...
One quick question on this; will this overwrite the existing world data? I noticed that some of the worlds already have text in the body of the articles. How will that get handled?
The upload process only writes the {{StellarData...}} template to the "xxx (world)/data" page, and only replaces the "Era=milieu 1116" one. So it's pretty careful not to delete any data. The only thing this does is update the {{StellarDataQuery}} section of the world page. What would be good would be is if there are duplicate world names to make sure the Disambiguation pages are in place. The upload process checks this to generate the unambiguous world names. Tjoneslo (talk) 14:50, 24 April 2016 (EDT)
like I said; GO FOR IT!
I've upload a number of pages, but discovered that I wouldn't upload the data base if the corresponding world page did not exist. Which do you like better: Generate a default world page for these missing pages or let you create the pages and upload the data set again? Tjoneslo (talk) 16:29, 24 April 2016 (EDT)
So the world page needs to exist first? Would just loading a blank world page (as long as the world name is the same as in the data set) be sufficient (Such as Uenkakh (world))?
I just noted that you also need the StellarDataQuery on the page...
I just finished uploading the worlds for the Empty Quarter sector. For any of the missing pages the upload created pages with a default (simple) template and the {{StellarDataQuery}} as needed. The pages need an update, but this should be simpler for you to work though the worlds. Let me know if you need any help. Tjoneslo (talk) 19:44, 24 April 2016 (EDT)

Allegiance code (2016)

There is a sub page for each code: Allegiance Code/CsIm or Allegiance Code/ImDd. When adding a new (or missing) code, create the new sub-page. On the page add a Template:AllegianceCode. For example:

{{AllegianceCode
|code=CsIm
|shortCode=Cs
|description=Client State
|detail = Third Imperium
|notes=
}}

And save the page. That's it. If you have questions about specific allegiances, create the page and put a note on the talk page. Tjoneslo (talk) 23:10, 6 May 2016 (EDT)

thanks Ssteve (talk) 23:21, 6 May 2016 (EDT)
Special:CargoTables/AllegianceCode -> You can see the whole list here. The other Cargo tables work in a similar fashion: Special:CargoTables/TradeSummary, Special:CargoTables/Sophonts, and Special:CargoTables/StellarData. Each has a template associated to manage the data. Tjoneslo (talk) 07:41, 7 May 2016 (EDT)

Dates with a comma (2016)

Ask Thomas (He's the boss), but I'm pretty sure that dates with a comma are not SOP (standard operating protocol). There are several thousand dates without a comma already and it would take a really long time to convert them over. Again, please check with Thomas, but I think we should probably stick with no commas.

  • The work you are doing is really cool. Thanks for all of your hard work and great effort.
  • 05:46, 9 May 2016 (EDT)

SOP = Standard operating Procedure....

Thomas is no more of "the boss" than you and I , He is the admin only, we are all equal here, and the changes made by one (and not changed by others) carry equal weight Ssteve (talk) 02:19, 23 June 2016 (EDT)

Ok. Still. It's better when we all try to keep to the same SOP. Makes things happen. Thanks!

Out of Order UWP Listings (2016)

Hey Steve, why are the UWP listings always out of chronological order? 1201 always comes before 1145. Is that how they come? Is there a good reason for that?

I guess I need to go back to all the world listings and get this straightened out, (at least in my head) and reconsider how to present this data . Going strictly from memory..

  • 993 – T20 - from UWP’S for the Empty Quarter: 993, 1105, 1125, & 1201 Imperial
  • 1105 – Classic Traveller - from Maps & UWP’S for the Empty Quarter: 993, 1105, 1125, & 1201 Imperial
  • 1125 - MegaTraveller - from Maps & UWP’S for the Empty Quarter: 993, 1105, 1125, & 1201 Imperial
  • 1201 – The New Era - from Maps & UWP’S for the Empty Quarter: 993, 1105, 1125, & 1201 Imperial
  • 1145 – ATU - from Maps & UWP’S for the Empty Quarter: 1145 Imperial (Alternate)

I'll have to re-read Stellar Reaches 17 to verify things. Ssteve (talk) 12:31, 8 July 2016 (EDT)

Hey Steve, it's not a big deal. Just my OCD speaking. I'll help you fix it if you discover it is an error. Please let me know if there are other ways I can support you. Do you still need allegiance codes input? ImDa?

ImDa = Imperial Domain of Antares; I fixed that one... However Sangre (world) shows Missing code Ht which doesn't seem to make sense to me. isn't Ht High Temperature? Well, maybe that airless rock is close to the primary...

Ssteve (talk) 14:31, 8 July 2016 (EDT)

Ht is usually a Mongoose (Mgt) code that means High Technology as in C or above. Thomas sticks to the T5 mantra pretty closely and has not included Mgt codes. It might be high temperature if it is a fan code, but it usually the Ho (hot) code that is used. I have done some work with climate and have a post at CotI about it in the OTU section, I think.

Language Redirects (2017)

Hi Steve, please make language redirects for the files that you are renaming.
Otherwise, the wiki will lose functionality.
I originally wanted to do the same, but Thomas asked me not to do so.
- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 08:45, 25 January 2017 (EST)

I thought that moving the page would do the same.

I'm on the Anglic (language) page now, and it shows that it was redirected from Anglic.

Ssteve (talk) 08:53, 25 January 2017 (EST)

Perfect, I was not aware. Thanks.
- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 09:32, 25 January 2017 (EST)
I had asked Maksim not to add the "(language)" to all of the language articles, and some other similar articles. The parenthetical in the article title is supposed to be a disambiguation for two topics with the same name. For example Vilani vs Vilani (language). The "(world)" for all the world articles is an exception, and we're kind of stuck with it. Tjoneslo (talk) 18:25, 25 January 2017 (EST)

I fully understand and support that reasoning. I suppose we'll have to live with the few exceptions (i.e. Ikonaz Vargr (language) vs. Ikonaz Vargr).

Should I undo my recent edits?

Ssteve (talk) 12:33, 26 January 2017 (EST)

No, it's fine to leave the articles for now. Unless the inconsistency really bothers you. Tjoneslo (talk) 20:51, 26 January 2017 (EST)

The inconsistency is not an issue with me; the way I look at it is that the AAB entries were written (at least as far as the OTU or whatever ATU you're in) by different authors over a span of centuries/millennia - lots of variations are likely to exist.Ssteve (talk) 06:50, 27 January 2017 (EST)

Apology (2017)

Steve, I extend an apology to you. What you do is extremely important and I have misspoken. Please accept my apology.
I am working on forming an editorial board for the wiki. Would you be interested in joining?
The wiki could really use your breadth of knowledge and good perspective.
- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 12:16, 28 January 2017 (EST)

Not really a big issue, I was just a little frustrated at the time. I just had to recall the little blurb (about merciless editing) and take it to heart.--Ssteve (talk) 12:23, 28 January 2017 (EST)

I'm with you, brother. I always have to remember merciless editing. Great wording. I sometimes get frustrated too.
No matter how many articles I write or ideas I donate to the blog, we're all in this together.
Ultimately, it's all about teamwork.
I'll drop you a message at CotI sometime.

Anglic Transform (2017)

Hi Steve, we have about three sources mentioning Transform:
I am not sure how we should reconcile them, but I bring it to your attention for your review and consideration.
- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 12:42, 17 February 2017 (EST)

First & Second Imperium Tags (2017)

User:Ssteve, when you destroy tags or categories like "Category: Rule of Man worlds" at Flange (world), you are destroying research that several folks, not just me have put into mapping out the borders of the rule of man.
Is there a way I can convince you not to do that?
Those links fill out the Rule of Man page and makes things happen for MWM among others. It's something I have been doing for him.
I absolutely respect you choice to make your own style, but destroying functionality helps none of us.
I really appreciate all of the cool things that you are doing. Thank you.
- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 10:18, 10 March 2017 (EST)

Not an issue from my end, along with apologies for neglecting to look at those tags. Let me know what others may be affected.

Empty Quarter T5SS Reviewed (2017)

Hi Steve, Empty Quarter has been T5SS reviewed. It if marked as such on Traveller Map, which is reviewed by Marc and FFE.
I am noticing that you keep removing those tags, which are used for tracking purposes.
Technically only the basic data is T5SS reviewed, not the Kemp materials, but that is a minor detail.
Thanks for all of your edits. They look great and make a huge difference.
- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 08:52, 31 March 2017 (EDT)

Thank you! (2017)

Thank you for your edits at Luriani Cultural Association. I am in the midst of updating and inputting Ley Sector and what a huge boost your edits are.

The Trillion Credit Squadron campaign data permissions? (2017)

Did we ever get permission from Alex Tingle and the other members of the The Trillion Credit Squadron campaign to post their data in the Wiki? Tjoneslo (talk)

Steve, I'd be happy to contact Alex Tingle if you are busy with other things.

Please let me know your thoughts.
- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 09:22, 13 August 2017 (EDT)

Tjoneslo - I don't recall using that site for the info on the Islands Clusters, although I may be mistaken; it's been quite a while since I put that into the Wiki. I know that I had not made any contact (at least I don't show it in my email archives). Ssteve (talk) 12:39, 15 August 2017 (EDT)

Maksim - If you would please make contact... Thanks Ssteve (talk) 12:39, 15 August 2017 (EDT)

Sure, Steve. I found you at CotI and left you my contact information.

- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 20:06, 15 August 2017 (EDT)

I meant that you could contact Alex..

Let me take a look at your contact info...

Ssteve (talk) 19:07, 23 August 2017 (EDT)

Thanks, Steve.

Welcome back, Steve. We have missed your talents.

  • Thank you.

JTAS Online (2017)

Thank you for you inputing the various articles for Journal of the Travellers Aid Society online publications.

I created a new Template:JTAS Online by year to put links between the article listings.

Because the correct and accurate name of the magazine is Journal of the Travellers' Aid Society Online or JTAS Online, I would like to move the article you are creating to JTAS Online <year>. The template above reflects this naming practice.

Please let me know what you think. Tjoneslo (talk) 17:18, 22 December 2017 (EST)

Thanks, Steve.

- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 10:21, 23 December 2017 (EST)

I see no problem with that at all. I know that the individual articles had a file name associated with them, but I did not preserve that info when I archived my copies. I'll wait and see how Marc will format the USB drive... I was dreaming of being able to do this over the Christmas break at work, but it'll have to wait a little longer.

Now I need to find the other years worth of archived stuff. Ssteve (talk) 11:36, 24 December 2017 (EST)

It loos great, Steve. Is there anything that I can do to help?

- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 14:06, 24 December 2017 (EST)

From my memory of JTAS online, all of the articles were given a unique number (starting from 1 and going up from there). My copy of the archive has all the articles as "article_NNN.html". The person to ask would be Robert Eaglestone, who was the person doing the actual work on creating the JTAS Online book. Tjoneslo (talk) 14:22, 24 December 2017 (EST)

That is also how I recall it being listed. I am not certain that the USB re-issue will follow that format.... One thing that has crossed my mind may take some doing, but let the idea stew in my head and see if I couldn't get it off the ground.

Mains PDF maps are too big (2018)

If you look at the File: Empt mains print 1.png, and File: Empt mains print 4.png pages you uploaded yesterday, you will see an error message "Error creating thumbnail: File with dimensions greater than 12.5 MP". This is a result of having an image file that is larger than about 3500×3500.

I can fix this by adjusting the Mediawiki settings, but I would like to know how big these images really are. Do you know, or can find, this information about these two files?

- Tjoneslo (talk) 08:16, 1 March 2018 (EST)

5200 x 7600; yes it is very large. The computer I am using at the time will not allow me to reduce the image size, and I cannot download software to modify the image size or quality; so for the time being I am stuck with what I get when I convert from PDF.

http://www.shrinkpictures.com/
This is the tool I use for resizing images for the wiki. It works great for me. Tjoneslo (talk) 19:13, 1 March 2018 (EST)

Nope, not making any progress. "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 20800 bytes) in /home/shrinkp/public_html/resize.inc.php on line 147"...

Looked to see if the cache if full, but that seems to be ok, clearing browse history had no effect either....

Ssteve (talk) 22:14, 1 March 2018 (EST)
That is a server error. I would write the shrink picture site via their contact info with the error message and see what they have to say. Tjoneslo (talk) 00:02, 2 March 2018 (EST)
