Why?

How is it helpful to have this information on a Wiki when it's all available already on dozens of websites around the net? - Seanr451

I have the knowledge, but not as much time. I have seen a lot of the web sites out there, and while a lot of them are quite detailed, I don't want to duplicate the level of detail in say the Traveller Atlas. The graphical bibliography has perhaps a bit too little detail. I like the way that wiki's are inter-linked, and I actually got motivated due to two things:
  1. Jimmy Simpson's Library data page, where he laments the fact that there is no wiki and
  2. I always envisioned giving my characters a computer, and telling them to research the next adventure, rather than simply handing them the pertinent library data.

Library Data

In a sense there are two wikis here. I don't see a problem with this for a couple of reasons.

  • They have been effectively divided. They can browse the wiki for info on the game itself. Or they can click on the ships library link and just search library data entries that are written from an "in game" point of view.
  • I have not entered portions of the entries that said restricted info or GM only. It looks like we’ll be creating a GM’s secrets Category.
  • I agree the library is better when written from an "in game" point of view. It seems more interesting that way, helps maintain the atmosphere, and is just more fun, but... the people involved know they're playing a game. So the occasional "out of game" point of view article they might come across shouldn't be a problem. Seanr451 16:17, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Where do we stop?

At the Classic Traveller material? Should I add MegaTraveller stuff too? What about GURPS Traveller material? Or I could just add the GT info that is prior to 1120 and doesn't contradict the CT stuff. Seanr451 13:04, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Don't Stop. Well for copyright purposes we don't want huge sections on anything, people should be able to find enough, but not a replacement for any supplement (other than library data), particularly Alien Races. I have almost everything, but not some of the most recent GURPS stuff.
We need to mark the version of the game, so that an article on the Virus is known to be from the alternate (TNE) future, and not applicable to GURPS timeline. (Some more details on this on the timeline pages too). Some things (for example the Ancient<->Droyne secret - GURPS covers this) have alternate GM explanations too. Dcorrin 14:37, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
Do we have copyright permission to add the "Forbidden Canon", i.e. all of the Digest Publication material? Or at least as much as would be fair?
We don't have permission to copy library data in toto, however fair use should cover most extracts, I can't recall any DGP supplement that is more than a few percent library data. Dcorrin 16:36, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
How about using references to the source books (like GT does referring to B129 for the Basic book p.129, or G:Space, etc.) - that way there could be lots of entries here with basic info and pointers to the copyrighted works that people could then more easily locate more info in their collections (or know what book they want)? (Hmm - I see this is a year old, so I may be commenting too late; just found this wiki - thanks to whomever posted about it to the TML) rgd 15:16, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

GM's Secrets

Ok, so my new thought is to have a category entitled GM's Secrets. Then all of the pages with GM secret info can be linked that way. We'll have to decide where to place the link to it though. I don't think that including it in the Ships Library would be a good idea. More for atmosphere than for any other reason. The truth is that most GM's Secrets are well known to most Traveller players. Seanr451 19:15, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

A gm information link, perhaps put after the non-canon section would be good. As you said most players really know the information, and for a gm to find the parts of articles that had GM info without a direct link would be difficult. I beleive that we just need to put the "secret" stuff in a location that casual broswing will not reveal it so tagging the articles with a (GM) at the end, organizing them in their own category is good. Data Dump or mass print.

Dan, I was on my user-talk and the idea of either a mass-print or data dump into a file for easier printing (and subsequent editing) came up. Is there a way (short of cut and paste each page) to get the data?

Thanks, Steve (Sstefan)

There is an export of the database, however you loose all the formatting. For scanning through say a spell cheker this might work though. Saving the following link current database will give you an XML version of the entire site (>1Mb) each page is delimited by <page>...</page> and the body is in a <text> tag. Can't Spell

Be thankful this is Traveller and not D&D; there you would really be in trouble if you can't "spell". ... and if I haven't mentioned this before, thanks a bunch for setting this wiki up. I sure enjoy re-reading some of these entries.

HIWG - Gushemege

  • I have the HIWG of Gushemege on my disc and much more. I could cut'n'paste everything about Rurevayn in TNE, that was written by me, and mark them as (uncanon). The question is what to do with the other MT & TNE documents ? Does someone have still have contact to David, Leighton or Clay, to ask for a permission to republish their writings under CC or GFDL ? What about derived work based on GEnie. The 3rd survey of TNE Gushemege is different to the 2nd survey from GEnie, as it was collapsed and edited by hand to match the storry. --Kraehe 16:45, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
I have gotten in contact with Clay Bush. He said "a firm no". Apparently he sold his rights to Marc. I've not tracked down anyone else at this point. If you put in your material use "Usdiki (world)". We can use internal setup to mark the history of the world in differenet milieus, location, etc. Tjoneslo 17:38, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Date organization

I've created a new page Date organization with my idea about how the dates (years) should be oraganized. It means we get rid of the Category: Dates and Category: History, the latter replaced with Category:Events. Feedback required. Tjoneslo 20:56, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

This Looks good, though you should probably update the date page to reflect the same periods. I like the Events category. This might help with eventually presenting a date specific access to the wiki data. Dcorrin 18:48, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
I found some circa dates, and some that list about, most notably in the article on Psionics. How should we represent these? The wikipedia seems to cover this with their century pages. Dcorrin 13:45, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
This gets back to the Template: Year nav that I borrowed from Wikipedia. If we set up decade (1110s, 1120s , etc) and century (10th, 11th, etc) pages, we should probably think about fixing this template to match. Tjoneslo 17:48, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Site makeover

Hi there! I've been a long-time Traveller enthusiast, having started playing back in the black book era, some time in the mid-'70s if my memory serves me correctly. I'm currently an admin on Memory Alpha where I do a lot of work formatting, tweaking CSS and JS, creating templates, etc. I was wondering if you'd be interested in me creating a new, customized look and feel for this wiki. I could see something using a black background with white text and red headers, like the black books used. I'd like to do a new logo and favicon as well. Thoughts? -- Renegade54 15:16, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Yay! A graphic artist. Please come help, we are so lost and confused as to making things look good. Tjoneslo 16:09, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
By all means. I have enough trouble to get templates the way I would like them, never mind messing with the style sheets. Dcorrin 13:50, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
I (personally) think the Imperial Sunburst at the top left corner of pages needs to be bigger, and possibly in colour - although we know that there is no "official" colour for the Sunburst. Yellow would be nice, though.... ;) Gruffty 20:08, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
Go ahead and change it, as long as it is not a shattered sunburst I have no problems. You can change the page icon too (even make a small sunburst the bullet... Dcorrin 21:45, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
<EEK!> Oh, nononono.... I'll completely screw it up if I try to do it! It took me multiple attempts just to upload the AM7 cover image!! <chicken noises..> Gruffty 23:27, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
I had a go at uploading a larger, maroon coloured sunburst to go in the top leaft corner of the pages, but the page is protected. So I've posted the image on my userpage; people can see if they like it or not before we go any further with it. I'll also do some other canon versions (maroon is the Imp Marines version, I think). Wiki on TravellerRPG.com

tjoneslo suggest I contact you. We are in the process of establishing an Official Traveller Wiki on the TravellerRPG.com website and I'd like to see what we can do about working with you and the editors here. If you get a chance, please drop me an email to grip (the @ sign) RPGRealms.com. Thanks, Hunter Gordon (QLI/RPGRealms)

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! Response to your email has been sent. Hunter Gordon(QLI/RPGRealms)

Add a category to sector images

I know this will be a complete pain, but can you add a category to each of the sector images you use for the sector articles. Say "Sector Image". It lets us find the images easily, and gets them out of the uncategorized images, which make it easier to find the bad images. Tjoneslo 23:06, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

I guess so, I didn't think that we were categorizing images... Has someone already done all the book images.
The Template: RpgBookImage drops all the book covers into the Category:RPG book images. This is one of those "this would make my life easier" requests. If you'd rather not do it, don't and I'll fix it sometime in the future. Tjoneslo 19:27, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
I see. They should be all done. Dcorrin 19:44, 4 July 2007 (UTC) Do we have a note on using the RpgBookImage in the help/about/template areas?

Sysop status

Dan, did you just make me a sysop? Tjoneslo 14:12, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, did you not want it? Dcorrin 15:07, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes, no, I mean great. I now have power, muhahahaha, you will all bow before the... I mean I will work to live up to the responsibility. It was just unexpected that's all. Tjoneslo 15:12, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
I currently don't have time to review all the articles that are edited, so I thought that it would help to have another sysop on the system. Dcorrin 15:41, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
More than glad to help. I poke my head in on occasion to the other wiki. How is it going over there? Tjoneslo 16:09, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Slow, but I seem to be the only administrative contributor (help/admin pages, templates etc), but then it hasn't been opened up fully as yet. This is the problem: that the reduced amount of time that I have is being split between here and there (and the En-Garde! wiki). Dcorrin 20:39, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Default skin

One of the requests of the Wikia owners is that we (the Traveller Wiki administrators) do is set the default skin for the Traveller Wiki to one of the Quartz skins. This skin is used to show the wiki to people who are anonymously editing and as the start skin for people who sign up for the first time. If you can take the time to preview the various skins and pick one it would be great. If you don't care, I'll pick one. Tjoneslo 17:24, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Thinking alike

We didn't think alike. I stole your idea expanding the UWP, tried making the popup using normal HTML titles, failed. Then found the CSS trick. I didn't want to muck up your UWPexp template while I was experimenting with mine so I made a copy. And reformatted it about 12 times. Tjoneslo 18:12, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Problems with colspan and if in templates

I don't honestly know what the problem is (or was) with the InfoboxStar template. I couldn't fix it either. So I converted the template to use the wiki table formating and the {{#if:}} parser function. This seems to work. I know you like the html table formatting better, but the templates don't like it as much. Tjoneslo 00:16, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for this. I don't like the wiki tables as much as they seem strangely context sensitive (e.g. something at the beginning of a line has different significance than elsewhere). Dcorrin 13:59, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Template: BookList

For your Template: BookList, instead of using "category=Ludography", use the complete list you want to include. e.g. "category=GDW books{{!}}T4 books{{!}}Imperium Games books". Add the list of categories you want to the Projects page.

It is also possible to use the includepage= and includematch= parameters with a template to re-write the information in the Template:InfoboxBook to select and output some of the data. This also may require adding a parameter or two to the template to get the proper data you want. Tjoneslo 00:07, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, I didn't think it would be easy. These categories are now auto-generated from the InfoboxBook page. Dcorrin 13:22, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
Listing just the categories I want doesn't work as, for example, all the GDW Books are also in category:ludography so the ordermethod=category prints out all categories. Dcorrin 15:54, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
Put a + sign in front of the category list. e.g. "category=+GDW Books", this will stop the other categories on the pages from being used as headers. Tjoneslo 17:57, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Excellent, I know about many of these but having them all in one place will be helpful. Tjoneslo 15:06, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
