Starships are designed with the Classic Traveller format, using High Guard.

The Type JL class Espionage Vessel is an intelligence starship.

Description (Specifications)

It is a vessel with 3-G and J-3 performance with a streamlined wedge hull.

EL-AHRAIRAHII: In order to allow its agents to move freely throughout the Domain of Deneb, the Order of the White Star has commissioned half a dozen vessels. They are designed so as to pass for typical type-A free traders, though they are actually sophisticated craft intended for the multitude of covert missions which the White Star undertakes. [2]

El-Ahrairah's electromagnetic masking is designed to make the craft look like a typical free trader to outside scans. Only when she is clearly not behaving like a mundane craft (i.e., running for a jump point at 3 gravities) is her true nature apparent. The ship's transponder can be altered to provide false identification of the vessel with little effort. [3]

History & Background (Dossier)

Intelligence vessels are often converted from run-of-the-mill tramp vessels or liners to blend in with conventional traffic on the trade lanes. A vessel like this would be inconspicuous in many locations throughout Charted Space. [6]

Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities

Vessel Peculiarities: The vessel is noted for its very powerful electronic warfare and sensor suites. They are very capable and top of the line. It is rumored to have special, experimental psionic equipment. [7]

Class Naming Practice/s: In keeping with the conventions employed by free traders, these ships are named for mythological characters, specifically those known for stealth, cunning, and deception. The vessels assigned to operatives has been renamed El-ahrairah, a name most suited to this type of ship. [8]

The name means "Enemies-Thousand-Prince" or "Prince with a Thousand Enemies" and is believed to be a mythical trickster "Rabbit" totem from ancient Terran myths. [9]
