The Type Aj class Free Trader is a mercantile starship, more commonly found in the Gateway Domain of the Third Imperium.
Basic Ship Synopsis
Description (Specifications)
It has jump drive-A, maneuver drive-A, and power plant-A, giving performance of jump-1 and 1-G acceleration. There is fuel tankage for 30 tons, sufficient for the power plant and one jump-1. Adjacent to the bridge is a computer Model/1. There are ten staterooms and twenty low berths. [1]
No turrets or weaponry are installed, but there are two hardpoints and two tons are set aside for fire control. There are no ship's vehicles. Cargo capacity is 82.0 tons. The hull is streamlined. The free trader requires a crew of four: pilot, engineer, medic, and steward. Gunners may be carried if the ship is armed. The ship costs MCr37.08 and typically takes eleven months to build. [2]

Basic Ship Characteristics
Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (of ten craft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (thousands of tons) where necessary. [3]

12. | Comments | The, Type Aj from M,C & S Engineering utilizes a streamlined semi-tubular body with canard wing control surfaces forward and the main lifting surfaces aft with vertical stabilizers mounted on the wing tips. A mounting point is provided for a collapsible cargo crane stowed just inside of the upper cargo hatch. Optional weapons hardpoints are located on the dorsal and ventral surfaces. |
History & Background (Dossier)
During the ill-fated Julian War the need for aerodynamic cargo vessels that could quickly land on the surface of a atmosphere bearing planet was paramount to the strategy at the time. The Imperium quickly contracted several architects to draw up the plans to such a ship, one of the winners was version "j" from M,C&S Engineering. However, Due to a clerical error, the Type-Aj plan was accidently disseminated through out the Lay sector, instead of the Antares and Empty Quarter sectors. Thus none of this class where involved in the Julian War. Eventually, over time this design did become available through out the Imperium as a sturdy alternative to the standard Type A. This class is predominantly found in the Ley Sector but occasional sightings can be made in any other sectors of the Third Imperium.
Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities
The Type Aj itself doesn't have a specific naming practice.
This class of free trader is well liked by its owners and they especially appreciate the crane it carries which can be mounted on the hull with a little effort allowing the ship to load and off load in more primitive starports. This is also complimented by the additional cargo bay door on the roof of the ship.
This design relies heavily on it wings to assist with lifting it up out of an atmosphere and also allowing it to land smoothly in an atmosphere. Additionally, this class of Type A has been found to be a bit harder to hijack due to the separation of the crew and cargo from the passengers.
