THE TRAVELLERS' DIGEST INDEX

  • VERSION 0.81
  • [Issues 1-21]
  • By Shannon Appel (appel@erzo.org)

Description (Specifications)[edit]

NOTE ON ORGANIZATION: The Traveller's Digest was a magazine about Traveller, and so that is this index's main focus. At the very end, in an appendix, is an index of the 2300AD articles which appeared in The Traveller's Digest from issue 9 through 21.

The main part of this index is divided into three parts:

  • 1. First is a section labeled 'Traveller Background', which covers various information that is not directly linked to either the Classic Traveller or Megatraveller rule systems. If an article is noted with an 'M', some of the information in it is specific to the Rebellion era. Articles without an 'M' annotation are specific to the Classic Traveller period. For the vast majority of the background information, there should be little changed between the two eras, except perhaps for political boundaries and allegiances.
  • 2. & 3. The second and third sections of this index are for 'Classic Traveller' and "Megatraveller', respectively. They include adventures, designs and rules which are specific to the mechanics of one of these system. In addition, it should be noted that the articles are usually also tied to the respective era of time.

Meta-history & Background (Dossier)[edit]

HISTORY, 1985-1990: DGP began publishing the Traveller's Digest in the early part of 1985. Like a multitude of other Traveller magazines, it began life as a small, black and white colored digest. However, the Traveller's Digest was quite different from the numerous Travelle 'zines that had come before it. It was filled, cover to cover, with innovative material and it was officially approved by GDW. In addition, it had a theme.

In the first issue of Traveller's Digest, a series of adventures called The Grand Tour was kicked off. The plan was to tour the entire Imperium, from the Spinward Marches, to the Solomani Rim, and back. From the start, the Tour went off well. The adventures slowly moved across the Imperium, uncovering pages of background material on each subsequent sector as it did.

No doubt due to the high quality of its material, the Traveller's Digest was a sucess. By the fifth issue, three colors were appearing on the cover, and by the ninth issue, the magazine graduated to a full-sized glossy magazine format. In addition, many of the ideas that were first seen in the Traveller's Digest reappeared in official GDW Traveller publications. First was Book 8: Robots; afterwards, the DGP staff were a major force behind the Megatraveller revision of the core Traveller rules. Throughout most of its life, the Traveller's Digest was integrally tied to the cutting edge of Traveller development.

In addition to The Traveller's Digest, the DGP group also published a number of high quality Traveller and Megatraveller supplements, often weaving ideas from them in and out of the Digest.

Near the end of 1990, the Grand Tour finally came to an end in the twenty-first, and final, issue of the Traveller's Digest. It was not the end for DGP's Traveller magazine, however. Scant months later, DGP published the first issue of its new magazine, The Megatraveller Journal.
