Tobibak is a nonindustrial water world, which has 90% or more of its surface covered in an ocean of water.

  • The inhabitants of this world live on the roughly 10% of exposed land mass, in underwater colonies, on city ships, or similar arrangements.
  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Strand Subsector of Corridor Sector in the Domain of Vland.
  • During the Long Night this world was know as Giuun.
  • It is the homeworld of the Tobai, a sophontic species and minor race.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)

Tobibak is a minor Imperial world in the Strand Subsector of the Corridor Sector, which connects the Spinward Marches to the core worlds of the Third Imperium.

Mainworld Data

Kwithwoohe, the Tobai word used for "ocean", in fact literally means "between", and refers to that layer of ocean where light penetrates. It is situated between the darkness of the ocean depths (hilkawi) and the endless expanse of the sky (yaakwihi, which refers to land as well as atmosphere). Outer space is a new concept to the Tobai, and they have yet to coin a word for it, but use some descriptive reference such as yaakwihinahiaakwihi ("sky beyond the sky").

Offworlders have applied their own terms for various regions of Tobibak. Seamounts are areas where the sea floor rises to within a few hundred feet of the surface. They occupy thousands of square miles, and are the areas of the greatest economic activity. Seamounts are often where mineral deposits occur, and their moderate depth means that long-term operations can be conducted there.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Tobibak has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. A Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear and will likely be easy for most sophonts to breathe.

Native Lifeforms

Native plants have colonized the small land area on Tobibak, most of them descendants of maritime varieties that adapted to a life on land. These are mainly ground-hugging creepers and low-lying brush, although some reeds and woody-stemmed plants have developed. These are never very tall, due to the planet's frequent storms. A few visitors have (intentionally or not) introduced offworld plants.

Some native animal species have developed the ability to exist on land for much of their life-cycles, but nearly every variety is required to return to the water at some point.

Native Sophont: Tobai

The Tobai are a primitive race in terms of technological advances.

  • Surprisingly, they are genetically similar to another species, the Githiaskio, a minor race found on Githiaski (Antares 2406) on the fringe of the Lesser Rift.
  • The distance between these worlds and the fact that the Tobai have developed sonar, suggests that the Tobai have been on Tobibak for millions of years.
  • How the Tobai came to be on Tobibak remains the central mystery to scientists interested in the world.
  • One suggested solution is the Ancients might have seeded the Tobai on Tobibak, just as they had done with Humaniti across space.

History & Background (Dossier)

For decades the Tobicorp Inc. Corporation harvested this world's abundant aquatic foodstuffs, and mined the minerals on the ocean floor.

  • The Corporation also exploited the indigenous octopoid race, the Tobai, using them as slave labor and suppressing the fact that they were intelligent.
  • When the whistle was blown to the Ministry of Colonization, it stepped in and prosecuted Tobicorp, and made the planet a Ministerial Protectorate.
  • This is unusual since it would normally be the Imperial Scout Service or the Navy that would be assigned to protect the home of an emergent intelligent species.

Imperial Landed Nobility (N)

Tobibak, as a member world of the Third Imperium has a member of the Imperial Nobility overseeing the world.

World Starport (Sp)

Tobibak has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

  • The Downport is named Seahaven, and located at the Karlsruhe Seamount.

World Population (P)

90,000 registered citizens, though the population of native Tobai is far in advance of this.

World Demographics

Tobai, 95%

Registered Imperial citizens are predominantly human, with small Vargr, Dolphin and Githiaskio minorities.

World Government (G)

Tobibak is governed by a Corporate Polity with a single corporation with a typical corporate structure as a government. A company town, or world. The typical corporate run world usually has a single purpose. Examples include mining, agriculture, or other kinds of resource extraction. But rather than a simple base of operations, there are facilities for housing workers and their families including hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure. How, or if, the children of the workers are incorporated into the workforce varies with companies. The corporation running the world may be a subsidiary of a larger interstellar corporation.

World Law Level (L)

World Technology Level (TL)

Tobibak possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

Note that this technology rating applies to the Imperial settlements and not the native Tobai.
