Theta Borealis Sector is a distant region located in non-aligned space, far to spinward of the Third Imperium.
- It is part of Charted Space.
- It is named for Theta Borealis, a supergiant star lying close to its center.
- The occasional Zhodani, Aslan, or Imperial trader has ventured upon the place, but few make the trip.
Meta-History & Background: 2019-0415
Theta Borealis is an old sector with some very early 1980's Classic Traveller materials available for it.
- Numerous non-canon fan materials exist for this sector including a very large variety of non-canon polities and background stories.
- In 1981, Theta Borealis Sector (book) was published.
- In 1984, Aslan (Alien Module) was published.
- In 1991, Alien - Solomani & Aslan was published.
- T5SS has not yet had the opportunity to review this sector.
Description (Specifications)
Theta Borealis Sector lies on the far spinward edge of Charted Space.
- It is a relatively densely populated sector in a largely empty region of space.
The sector was initially surveyed during the Imperial First Survey.
- First Survey primary data on the sector was very fragmented.
The sector was extensively surveyed during the Imperial Second Survey.
- IISS personnel based at Pautho were heavily involved in gathering and collating the survey data.
- Much of the updated data relating to the sector was based on remote long-term observations done over approximately 70 years (from 995 to 1065).
- Most of the output from these observations was automatically generated.
World Listings: 1105
Comprehensive Second Survey UWP data for all worlds lying within the sector can be retrieved from Theta Borealis Sector data files.
- The primary source material for all data is Traveller Map.
- Other sources may differ: some elements of the data may be contradictory or incorrect.
- Data is occasionally updated as new information becomes available.
- Scouting missions gathering reliable, verified data can receive substantial payment.
Astrographic Features & Trade Routes: 1105
The following astrographic and commercial data regarding the sector has been determined:
Mains
The Korsumug Main, the great chain of Jump-1 systems linking Astron Sector, Theta Borealis Sector, and Mavuzog Sector, runs through the region.
- It is also known as the Thetan Main.
- It passes through the spectacular heart of the Borealis Group.
- The narrow bridge of stars that carries the Main across the Thetan Rifts is known as the Korsumug Gate.
- Korsumug raiders cruise the Main, looking for plunder, resources, and glory.
A simple chart showing Mavuzog Sector, Theta Borealis Sector, the rimward edge of Astron Sector, and the Korsumug Main running between them.
- The majority of worlds forming the Main lie within Theta Borealis sector.
(Chart sourced from Traveller Map).
Worlds in purple lie on the Korsumug Main.
- Vech, the Jaibok homeworld, is marked in red.
- Jansazar, the Jansa homeworld, is marked in green.
- Jelmirt, the Capital of the Percavid Marches, is marked in yellow.
- Isbelra, the Capital of the Trooles Confederation, is marked in blue.
Clusters & Traces
Borealis Group
The sector is dominated by the Borealis Group, a very large cluster of stars containing an unusually high number of giant stars.
- It is an astrographic feature visible across the whole of Charted Space.
- It is centered on the supergiant star Theta Borealis.
- The cluster lies close to the coreward edge of the Great Rift.
The skies within the region are spectacular. Some of the brighter stars can be seen from the surfaces of worlds during daylight hours.
Significant Stars
The brightest stars in the group are called the Borealean Stars. They include:
- Theta Borealis: A7 Ia Supergiant, Luminosity: 73,000 sols.
- Sigma Borealis: M9 II Bright Giant, Luminosity: 16,200 sols.
- Tau Borealis: M9 II Bright Giant, Luminosity: 16,200 sols.
- Epsilon Borealis: M7 II Bright Giant, Luminosity: 15,550 sols.
- Zeta Borealis: M5 II Bright Giant, Luminosity: 14,900 sols.
- Mu Borealis: M5 II Bright Giant, Luminosity: 14,900 sols.
- Kappa Borealis: A3 Ib Supergiant, Luminosity: 13,000 sols.
- Rho Borealis: M4 II Bright Giant, Luminosity: 12,840 sols.
They are surrounded by more than sixty other giant and subgiant stars, many almost as bright as the named giants, as well as numerous main sequence stars and white dwarfs.
Many of the stars are active objects, experiencing violent flare activity and producing a lot of EM noise across the spectrum.
- The background interference is significant - sensor operations and communications can be seriously hampered.
- Levels of interference vary periodically.
- Areas of the cluster may contain clouds of matter thrown off by stellar activity.
- Radiation Levels may be significantly raised on worlds within the cluster.
- Many of these gigantic, turbulent stars are destinations on the Korsumug Main.
Muravia Cluster
The Muravia Cluster is a small cluster of stars within the larger Borealis Group.
- The supergiant star Theta Borealis lies on its trailing edge.
- It is considered likely to be the next major target of Korsumug aggression.
Rifts & Voids
The highest tech level commonly encountered out This Far Along (spinward of the Third Imperium) is TL–12, though a few worlds may be more advanced.
- This level of technology allows the routine use of up to Jump-3 drives.
- Locally, areas that cannot be routinely crossed by Jump-3-capable vessels are denoted as rift regions.
A simple chart showing rift regions within Theta Borealis Sector.
(Chart sourced from Traveller Map).
Thetan Rift
The Thetan Rift is a large area of lower stellar density lying within the spinward-coreward quadrant of the Sector. It is composed of two separate regions:
- The Thetan Rift, measuring around 5 parsecs coreward-rimward by around 9 parsecs spinward-trailing.
- The Zephor Void, measuring around 4 parsecs coreward-rimward by around 3 parsecs spinward-trailing.
- The Korsumug Gate marks its trailing edge.
Thetan Void
The Thetan Void is a large area of lower stellar density lying within the coreward-trailing quadrant of the sector.
- It measures around 7 parsecs coreward-rimward by around 11 parsecs spinward-trailing.
- The Korsumug Gate marks its spinward edge.
Korsumug Gate
Korsumug Gate
The Great Rift
The rimward edge of the sector lies adjacent to the Great Rift, the great expanse of empty space dividing the Imperial core from those regions lying "Behind the Claw".
- It is a vast impassable barrier.
Other Astrographic Features
Uncharted Anomaly
The "Enigma of Theta Borealis" [1] is a mysterious astrographic feature.
- It is believed to be an uncharted space-time anomaly
- Its precise location, nature, and characteristics remain unknown.
- It is believed to lie across parts of Monway Subsector and Banderhue Subsector.
Stellar Distribution
A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within Theta Borealis Sector.
- The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
- The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.
(Chart sourced from Traveller Map).
- The two distinctive circular clusters of giant stars that make up the Borealis
Group can be clearly distinguished, with Kappa B (to coreward) and Theta B
(to rimward) at their respective centers.
Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.
- Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
- Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the sector and far beyond.
