Theta Borealis style="width: 250px; height: 350px; border: solid 1px black; float: right; clear: left"

Theta Borealis Sector is a distant region located in non-aligned space, far to spinward of the Third Imperium.

Meta-History & Background: 2019-0415

Theta Borealis is an old sector with some very early 1980's Classic Traveller materials available for it.

  • Numerous non-canon fan materials exist for this sector including a very large variety of non-canon polities and background stories.

  • T5SS has not yet had the opportunity to review this sector.

Description (Specifications)

Theta Borealis Sector lies on the far spinward edge of Charted Space.

  • It is a relatively densely populated sector in a largely empty region of space.

The sector was initially surveyed during the Imperial First Survey.

  • First Survey primary data on the sector was very fragmented.

The sector was extensively surveyed during the Imperial Second Survey.

  • IISS personnel based at Pautho were heavily involved in gathering and collating the survey data.
  • Much of the updated data relating to the sector was based on remote long-term observations done over approximately 70 years (from 995 to 1065).
  • Most of the output from these observations was automatically generated.

Comprehensive Second Survey UWP data for all worlds lying within the sector can be retrieved from Theta Borealis Sector data files.

  • The primary source material for all data is Traveller Map.
  • Other sources may differ: some elements of the data may be contradictory or incorrect.
  • Data is occasionally updated as new information becomes available.
  • Scouting missions gathering reliable, verified data can receive substantial payment.

Astrographic Features & Trade Routes: 1105

The following astrographic and commercial data regarding the sector has been determined:

Mains

The Korsumug Main, the great chain of Jump-1 systems linking Astron Sector, Theta Borealis Sector, and Mavuzog Sector, runs through the region.

  • It is also known as the Thetan Main.
  • It passes through the spectacular heart of the Borealis Group.
  • The narrow bridge of stars that carries the Main across the Thetan Rifts is known as the Korsumug Gate.
  • Korsumug raiders cruise the Main, looking for plunder, resources, and glory.

  • The majority of worlds forming the Main lie within Theta Borealis sector.

Clusters & Traces

Borealis Group
The sector is dominated by the Borealis Group, a very large cluster of stars containing an unusually high number of giant stars.

Theta Borealis Bright Stars 2.jpg

The skies within the region are spectacular. Some of the brighter stars can be seen from the surfaces of worlds during daylight hours.

Significant Stars
The brightest stars in the group are called the Borealean Stars. They include:

They are surrounded by more than sixty other giant and subgiant stars, many almost as bright as the named giants, as well as numerous main sequence stars and white dwarfs.

Many of the stars are active objects, experiencing violent flare activity and producing a lot of EM noise across the spectrum.

Muravia Cluster
The Muravia Cluster is a small cluster of stars within the larger Borealis Group.

Rifts & Voids

The highest tech level commonly encountered out This Far Along (spinward of the Third Imperium) is TL–12, though a few worlds may be more advanced.

Thetan Rift
The Thetan Rift is a large area of lower stellar density lying within the spinward-coreward quadrant of the Sector. It is composed of two separate regions:

Thetan Void
The Thetan Void is a large area of lower stellar density lying within the coreward-trailing quadrant of the sector.

Korsumug Gate
Korsumug Gate

The Great Rift
The rimward edge of the sector lies adjacent to the Great Rift, the great expanse of empty space dividing the Imperial core from those regions lying "Behind the Claw".

  • It is a vast impassable barrier.

Other Astrographic Features

Uncharted Anomaly

The "Enigma of Theta Borealis" [1] is a mysterious astrographic feature.

Stellar Distribution

A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within Theta Borealis Sector.

  • The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
  • The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.

Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.

  • Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
  • Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the sector and far beyond.

Sector Summary: 1105

The Theta Borealis sector has 407 worlds with an estimated population of 893 billion, a per capita income of Cr3,639, and a total economy is BCr3,250,344. These worlds originate an interstellar trade of BCr4,125 through 339 starports (75 Class A, 94 Class B, 121 Class C, 49 Class D) employing 490,050 people. Driving this interstellar trade are 64 Agricultural (Ag) worlds, 35 Non-Agricultural (Na) worlds, 26 Pre-Agricultural (Pa) worlds, 46 Pre-Industrial (Pi) worlds, 22 Rich (Ri) worlds, and 21 Industrial (In) worlds. The governments in Theta Borealis maintain 19 Naval bases, 13 Scout bases, and two Military bases. The average technology level is 8 (with most between 5 and 10). The highest technology level is 13 at Boswool (Theta Borealis 0205), Pautho (Theta Borealis 1506), Isbelra (Theta Borealis 1602), Oujda (Theta Borealis 2703), Tamatave (Theta Borealis 2708), and Nithus (Theta Borealis 3107).

The Theta Borealis sector contains 605 stars and 4,188 identified planets; 264 monostellar systems, 100 binary systems, 33 trinary systems, and ten systems with four or more stars. 226 of the 407 systems (55%) have native gas giants. There are 14 Asteroid (As) belts, 25 Desert (De) worlds, 22 Garden (Ga) worlds, nine Ice-capped (Ic) worlds, 62 Poor (Po) worlds, 38 Vacuum (Va) worlds, and 29 Water (Wa) or Ocean (Oc) worlds.

Theta Borealis has an estimated population of 893 billion distributed across 43 High population (Hi) worlds, 35 Moderate population (Ph) worlds, 170 Non-industrial (Ni) worlds, 103 Low population (Lo) worlds, and seven Barren (Ba) worlds. The highest population worlds are Plustron (Theta Borealis 1732), Jelmirt (Theta Borealis 1223), Ratan (Theta Borealis 2822), Devalera (Theta Borealis 0525), Obaroth (Theta Borealis 0434), and Quper (Theta Borealis 0537). Korsumug Empire

The Korsumug Empire has jurisdiction over 32 worlds with an estimated population of 145 billion, a per capita income of Cr1,858, and a total economy is BCr269,419. These worlds originate an interstellar trade of BCr140 through 22 starports (5 Class A, 5 Class B, 11 Class C, 1 Class D) employing 21,305 people.
