Notes (2017)

If possible, Thomas AKA Tjoneslo, please try to capture the non-canon and unnamed sophonts as well.

The new Template:SectorSophonts is run off a query from the Template:SophontData. If the sophonts don't appear in the list it is because the article either does not exist or is a placeholder which needs to be completed. Tjoneslo (talk) 20:33, 4 February 2017 (EST)

Thanks for your reply.
I guess I better put it on my list to update all of the entries to SophontData then. LOL ;-)
Thanks again!

The Spinward Marches sector is not only a frontier, it is a war torn frontier. The Imperium expanded unclaimed territory until it reached the Marches, but there it found other races already in place. Most of the races were inconsequential, but the Zhodani had an empire nearly as large and as powerful as the Imperium. They were a force to be reckoned with; they resisted the Imperial advance and created the atmosphere of contention and conflict.

  • The Spinward edge of the Imperium is 130 parsecs from the Emperor's throne on Capital. Beyond that border lie many worlds; some are client-states of the Imperium, while others are independent non-aligned governments.
  • True development of the Spinward Marches began with the arrival of the Imperials in 60 when Mora (3124) was settled; Regina (1910) was settled in 75. Between 200 and 400, the major Imperial exploration and settlement of the Marches took place. By 500, there were Imperial explorations beyond the Marches and into Zhodani territory in the adjacent Foreven (Iakr) sector.
  • The relationship between the Zhodani Consulate and the Imperium has never been an easy one. The continuing history of frontier wars between two empires makes another war both possible and probable.
  • There are ample signs of tension between the Imperium and the Consulate. The Zhodani supported guerrilla insurgency on Efate, Zhodani military preparations which have resulted in Imperial registered ships being fired on, boarded or destroyed, both sides have established trade restrictions on the other side's commodities.
  • The sector capital is Mora 0704 AA99AC7-F Hi In

The Extra World (2016)

The official count of worlds in the Spinward Marches is 439. The world listing shows 440. The difference is Ayoreldold. This is a "Ghost World" which shows up in some canon references but not others. The metadata for the world has the complete discussion of the source(s) of the confusion.

Multi-System Governments Within Imperial Space?

There seems to be some as have the view that the Imperium will not permit multi-world polities within its bounds (even within a system, but definitely between systems). The Verba Trading Block is designated as a government in Spinward_Marches_Sector. I realize it is non-canon and I'm not certain whether the impression some have that multi-world/multi-system governments is accurate (or where it would draw from in terms of canonical reference) but I'm equally unclear if there are any canonical incidences of multi-system polities within Imperial space or if there is any canonical reference that suggests such a thing is legitimate in the eyes of the property holder (Marc).

Not saying anything should be done about this immediately, but if anyone happens across a definitve answer on this (or ever gets the chance to ask Marc), it might suggest some changes in any text related to the Verba Trading Block.

Also, a trading block might be problematic if it taxes interstellar traffic. I think they would exist, but I have seen perspectives some hold that anything that added a fee, tarrif, etc. to interstellar shipping would be breaking one of the Imperium's most critical directives/laws. Again, don't have a reference handy but just want to bring the subject up.

My personal suggestion would be:

  1. In Spinward_Marches_Sector, do not list the Verba Trading Block as a government.
  2. The format for Spinward_Marches_Sector and of sectors generally could probably stand to have someplace to put non-governmental blocks/powers or economic blocks. (Maybe there is one, but didn't see it on the sector description for the Marches). I would have said the section with trade routes, but it seems focused solely on astrography. Not sure how to word it, but seems like trade-related entities should be listed separately from governments even if they do lobby governments. Maybe 'economically significant entities' or some such.
  3. I think treating the trading block as an NGO or arms-length agency of government (we see these a lot these days) would avoid the perhaps unclear concept of a multi-system polity within Imperial space. I think it could be part of a multi-party Agency that has Imperial participation as well as local governments / merchantile interests. We do stuff like this with global oceanographic mapping and air traffic management and other such things so I could see a trade-related entity that had representation from local single sytem polities, trade groups, and the Imperium.
