Notes (2019)

I thought about this a bit too much. Start with a regular Western toilet. That can be considered the Human standard but it's not even the standard on Earth. There are other types of toilets in other countries, but I think in the Imperium they'd end up with a standard something like the Western sitting-toilet we are used to.

Vargr need to squat, which some Human cultures do as well, so it's easy to add small steps to the sides of it. This enables them to position over the opening with the seat up. Vargr made toilets are close enough that Humans can figure out what to do.

Aslan can squat but prefer to stretch out their bodies in an almost prone position to align their relatively short intestinal tract. A pair of handles across from the Human toilet will handle that as well, but a toilet made by Aslan for exclusive Aslan use is going to look more like a massage table with a basin behind and underneath it. So the TAS pamphlet says not to mistake it for a massage table and gives suggestions about how Humans can use it without making a mess.

Hivers have something that looks like a hose that they use to vacuum out their cloaca. If you're not sorry you asked yet...

K'Kree prefer to let fly wherever they are and they're not going to confine themselves to a small room to do their business. It makes a mess, but it gives something for the lower status males to clean up. This explains some of the more unfortunate translations of K'Kree servant names. Aboard a passenger freighter, there simply has to be a designated patch, where everyone takes their business. The floor there is designed to open like a trapdoor and is self-cleaning. Smells are controlled to a point. K'Kree don't seem to mind the smell of their own waste products as it is a sign that their family is well-fed.

>Edit... this just in. I found an actual source on this in a Challenge Magazine, I can't believe they went there. "The methods of waste removal on the Xeekr'kir! are at once primitive and highly sophisticated. No specific facilities are apparent for the removal of K'kree waste, which, over the period of a one week jump, would be expected to pile pretty high in the simulated meadowlands. Instead, there is a symbiotic relationship between the grasses of the floor and a bacteria designed to immediately decompose K'kree wastes. The bacteria break the waste down much more quickly than nature would be able to, and the grass absorbs the nutrients more rapidly as well. The bacteria are also airborne, and is carried by the simulated breezes to be distributed more evenly around the main compartment. The grass/bacteria symbiont was genetically engineered especially for this task." [1]

Virushi really need something like a K'Kree trapdoor, but their actual bathrooms are more like a big shower aligned as a bidet. A lever rotates a vacuum drain in the floor to pick up the waste product after the Virushi has left the stall.

Vegans have something similar to Hivers.

Droyne have a perch they sit on and a bucket underneath it. They can bring a perch adapter and use a Human toilet just fine. Their freshers don't have walls or doors around them, because they all like to go together.

Ancients used to go on the floor and let it dissolve away.

Derfi'gassak just go wherever they feel like it.

Bwaps can use a Human toilet by facing backwards, "Butters-style" or get an adapter that makes room for their tail. Their normal toilets look like stools.

Nenlat have to be immersed in water. The term "water closet" becomes more appropriate.
