General Description
The Attaray class is a small combat vessel deployed by the Trooles Confederation. Examples of the class can be encountered throughout the coreward parts of Theta Borealis Sector and occasionally within the rimward subsectors of Astron Sector. The vessel has a fully streamlined flattened sphere hull and is fitted with fuel scoops and a fuel purification plant, allowing it to perform wilderness gas giant or hydrosphere refueling.
- It carries a ship's vehicle for interface duties.
- It carries several sentry drones that are deployed as required.
Basic Ship Characteristics
Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (...of ten subcraft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (...thousands of tons) where necessary. History & Background (Dossier)
Historically, the predecessors of the Attaray design was used for slaving, privateering, blockade running, and to support surface safari activities. Schooners were also popular among pirates, being noted for their range and wilderness refueling abilities. They can operate around planets and in intense gravity wells, and can operate from ports too small for major fleet combatants such as frigates or trade galleons. They still mount enough weaponry to intimidate merchant vessels into submission.
Schooners first evolved from a variety of small merchant vessels used for trade routes and as pleasure yachts built for wealthy merchants. Navies started using the design as a light combatant, which lowered the speed and ease of handling, in favor of light hull plating armor. Schooners were immediately popular with colonial traders and privateers.
Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities
Vessel Peculiarities:
Naval engineers complain that the out-sized fusion power plant is the reason the additional engineering mate is required, "just to watch read-outs for deuterium-tritium decay rates and check reactor pressures". The abundant power makes the vessel conspicuous to passive sensors, but provides good agility, allows a sophisticated computer, and powers multiple pulse laser.
- Beam lasers were originally specified for the vessel. Some suspect embezzlement, though more likely a shortage shifted the available beam laser supplies to the larger ships in the fleet.
Class Naming Practice/s:
Vessels of the Trooles Confederation are given alphanumeric designations and callsigns by other interstellar states. TC refers to Trooles Confederation (a designation applied to all Confederation combat units), 4 is a multiple of hundreds of tons of displacement and also indicates at a glance the number of weapons mounts, and when it is used 'b' refers to the version of the vessel, relating to its construction tech level and bracketing its maximum jump potential. Type codes will often repeat: 'Attaray' is an easy to remember class name to identify the specific type of vessel.
- Individual vessels are named by a committee using an authorized list.
